Lake Norman Yacht Club Hosts U20 East Coast Championships Don Corey Dominates Regatta In an idyllic weekend of racing, 13 U20's battled it out for the U20 East Coast Championships at Lake Norman Yacht Club's Carolina Keelboat One-Design Regatta. The fleet enjoyed perfect U20 conditions with 15-24 knots of wind on Saturday and 5-15 knots on Sunday. The conditions for the three races on Saturday had the fleet planing at 10-13 knots for most of the downwind legs. The upwind legs were more a matter of power management in the gusts and hitting the lifts. Playing the shifts in the lighter winds separated the fleet in the two races on Sunday.. Don Corey on Uh-Huh demonstrated his mastery of U20 racing by taking 4 firsts and one second in the five-race regatta. Competition was fierce throughout the rest of the fleet with trophy positions changing hands with every race. In the end O'Malley Avant, from Charleston, claimed second place honors and John Woodruff, from Detroit, took third. The 13-boat fleet comprised 7 resident boats from Lake Norman: Don Corey, Uh-Huh; Allyson Young, Up My Ally; Charlie Rouse, #151; B.J. Jones, Rumbullion; Scott Hollerman, Antares; Bob McGrath, Pinocchio; and Chet Weisenmayer #80. Road Warriors included O'Malley Avant, #87, from Mt. Pleasant SC; John Woodruff, Antics, from Detroit, Charley Smart, Kindred Spirit, from Chicago; Charlie Cushing, Whirlgig, from St Petersburg; Gregg Henning, Goombay Smash, from Chicago; and Jody Bailey, Kaizen, from Leesburg Virginia. Lake Norman Yacht Club provided a perfect venue for the regatta -- top-notch race management, great weather, a picture-perfect setting, and gracious hospitality. Saturday night's U20 dinner gave the fleet a chance to socialize, trade war stories, and pig out on fresh oysters, steak, and baked potatoes. As always, the U20 Corinthian spirit shown bright in helping fellow racers with logistics, lost rudder pins, and maintenance issues with tow vehicles. Regatta results are as follows:
