Hi All,

Please be looking for your ballot as it is in the mail.  Please if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  It is important that these two ballot items pass for the future of the U20 Class.

Thanks for all your support,

What are the two ballot items, I heard mast and GPS but then there was talk of laminate sails at NA's.  Can't wait to run the iPhone App on the boat and I am wondering if is going to be class legal so... what is on the ballot?  I know that time to consider what is on the ballot is dangerous but want to be able to return the ballot expediantly so we can embrace our future.

Standing by,

Nate

Thanks to all of you who are doing this work on our behalf! I've already mailed in my ballot, but am curious on how the GPS rule will be interpreted, assuming it passes. I'm particularly interested in the Velocitek SC-1 because I have one. The rule makes it pretty clear that compass and speed modes would be acceptable, and the countdown timer should be no problem.

I assume Start-Line mode is outlawed because it's a position measurement based on two GPS waypoints.

I assume the Tactical Heading mode is allowed, since it's just doing the arithmetic to subtract a manually preset wind direction and is providing only compass information similar to a tactical compass like Tacktick.

I'm left wondering about VMG mode, which simply displays the product of speed and the cosine of tactical heading. Allowed or outlawed? It's not prohibited under article OD-VI since it doesn't use electronically gathered wind data, just a manually set estimate of wind direction.

Did these questions get addressed somewhere already?

Cheers,

Rick if VMG is speed then this would allow it.  There is no statement regarding set points, speed to a certain spot etc so by my reading... if not explicitly prohibited it is allowed.  I 'm sure that there are people that will say that is "not what we meant" but that is the hairy deal, having wording that isn't overly burdensome but captures the wants and desires of the class.  If this isn't the wording you like then you should vote no.  I want to run the iPhone tactical compass application and this wording doesn't prohibit that so I support this wording, although I do think is is a huge change for the class.

Nate

I wrote the above this morning and expected challenges to my broad statement about what this rule allows now it is four twenty and no response.  Forums like this are what someone would use to interpret what exactly the rules mean if they are challenged so I was kind of hoping there would be a "No, VMG is not allowed!" to help set up the interpretation.  I guess this really is a HUGE change for the class.

I say if it can do it, let it. The more stuff to distract my competition the better.
