Now that the fleet has decided to allow the new breed of GPS-based instruments, does anyone have a recommendation?

I bought a Rockbox this year and have been extremely happy with it.
Pros: Big display, countdown, waypoints, track recording for download later, head to wind feature, duel line display, graphs, REMOTE! (this is the best feature. clip the remote to your belt and you can make all the adjustments without putting your beer down!)
Cons: Battery life (1 set per day, 3 AA) large mast bracket, (It has not caught on anything yet but it looks like it can), Price ($700.00)
I could buy rechargables but I have not had much success with them either.

Mark,
Take a look at Thomas Distributing for good quality chargers and batteries. I have had great success with products from this company. I am still using some AA batteries that I bought there almost 10 years ago.
They have chargers that handle AA and AAA batteries but also combo chargers that will handle cell phone and other batteries in addition to AA. With good quality rechargables, you will likely triple (or more) the run time on your gps. I have used the Maha and Sanyo cells from them, both are great. Fast chargers are nice, but slow chargers are more gentle to your cells and allow longer life. Keep an extra set on the boat.
