Start making your plans! Let's make this the biggest U20 North Americans held ever!
Who's coming?
Goombay Smash #149 will be there!
Let us know your intent! The list starts here!
-
Slippery will be there.
Jim Pearson

-
This is a fantastic place to sail and visit. Mike will host a great event that should not be missed.
Brad
-
Just got the commitment from the crew
#26 Junta will be there!
-
Dragon Bait 158 will be there
-
We'll be there with scram #159 from Nawth Caolina. It's an easy trip to a beautiful part of the country. A record turn out would be teriffic for this event so let's beat the 2004 and 2010 record showing of twenty four Ultimate 20s.
Don Corey
-
Redbeard #63 will be there.
Brad Lawson
-
Needless to say, Far Far #38 and I will be there too. Macatawa Bay YC Is a great place to hold the 2011 NAC . The club has quick access to Lake Michigan and Macatawa Bay and great facilities . I promise an experienced and capable race committee Lake Michigan is a spectacular place to sail in August. The "Sunset Coast" is a good place to vacation for family and friends. We sincerely hope you all will come. Lets hear from more boats, 20 plus boats would be terrific. We will have the NOR in place soon.

How does a typical August day unfold there? Westerly system reinforced by a thermal? Wind speeds?
-
Is this all we can get to commit so far! Great venue, Great People. Let's hear from you! Are you in?
-
We are rounding up a 3rd crew...but plan to be there.
-
Sassy will be there.
-
The NOR and Registration Forms are now available for NA's at http://www.u20class.org/NorthAmericans/2011NA/2011NAs.html
Enter early... spread out your expenses!
-
It has been quiet... Way to quiet! Are you making plans to be at North American's this year. Let us know. Let's add you to the committed list!
http://u20class.org/NorthAmericans/2011NA/RegisteredBoats.html
Let's GO! Lets's GO! Let's GO!
-
I'm really bummed that I'll miss this. Work always has me busy the weekends that include 2nd and 3rd Sundays in August. Hopefully the calendar works out better for me next year.
-
Laura and I would like to come and bring Dragon Bait with a third. Between us we are 500 lbs, so even with a small third crew we will be over the weight limit. I'd like to request a weight limit waiver for Dragon Bait based on the fact that we're partners and not trying to gain a competitive advantage. If you have any objections to this waiver, please post them here. I'll ask the executive committee for a ruling in a couple of weeks so we can firm up our plans and register for the regatta.
Cheers,
Rick
-
No problem with me. Glad your coming. To date commitments are pretty slim. I hope we get some more action soon. A dozen boats for a NA. would be sad and look terrible for Class. We seem to get lots of chatter about going to Regattas and then people fall off the radar as Regattas gets closer.

-
Rick,
We had this circumstance last year at North American's in Dillon, CO. All skipper's were in agreement to let the overweight limit boat race.
I do not forsee any issues.
See you at NA's
Gregg
-
Wanted to book early. Where is a good place to stay?
Thanks
-
Mark
If you want some place swank and near all the downtown pubs and such then City Flats is a really cool place right downtown, about a 10 min drive back to the boats.
Otherwise look at the Microtel like the Comfort INN. they are about the same mileage but shorter time to get to the boat. There is not much around that area though.
If you see the Holiday INN Ex or Fairfield INN's they are about 20 mins from the boat.
Cheers
Tac
-
I'm in, not sure if it's crew on Semper Gumby or chartering Running with Scissors. But I'm in, either way.
-
Thanks Tac,
Not looking for swank, just cheap but would like to stay where other teams are staying.

Just a follow-up on Hotels for the U-20 NAC. Both the Haworth Inn and the downtown City Flats Hotel are taken for the regatta dates (weddings). Still, there are plenty of good. hotels in the area. The one I would recommend is the Double Tree Hotel Holland, Michigan. I've talked with their Director of Sales, Lisa Wedding and she has set a block of 20 rooms for the regatta dates 8/9-8/14, 2011 at a discount rate. You can view the hotel and its amenities at www.holland.doubletree.com .To make reservations you can:
1. Phone the hotel directly at 616-394-0111. Please mention the group code "NAC" and the dates.
2.Phone the reservation specialist office 1-800-222-8733.Mention the group code NAC to get the special rate
3. Visit the hotel's web site www.holland.doubletree.com. Enter the group code NAC in the field provided.
To receive the special rate reservations must be made by 7/10/2011. If you have any problems call or email me.
There are a number of other good hotels available in Holland. Some that I would recommend are:
Holiday Inn Express Holland
12381 Felch Rd

Hampton Inn
12427 Felch Rd

I got my reservations!!! My registration is in the mail!!!!
The offer still stands for any west coasters heading east to stay at my house to save on costs. If you feel like racing the weekend before you can enter the Al Henning Memorial Regatta!
Let me know, I have plenty of space for people and boats!!! Plenty of Rum as well! 8) ;D
-
As we all know logistics of getting your boat to the event is a big part of if you will go or not. I would like to get some details around the rig the Bostons used to get 2 boats to Dillon on the same trailer. Tac, who came up with the design and what were some of the challenges you overcame? I would like to see if we can put together something similar.
-
If you are considering coming to North American's in Holland and are not sure you have the crew or you would like to charter a boat because you cannot make the drive. Post on this thread and let us know your intentions. Let's see what we can do to bring it all together.
That's what the U20 Class is all about!
-
Have made reservations at the HI Express and the registration was mailed a couple days ago. Lake Norman U20s need to make every effort possible to attend this one as regatta coordinator Mike Bremer has faithfully been attending LNYC Keelboat regattas for years (even before U20s). This regatta is a central location for attracting U20s from a very large portion of the country. We could easily make this event the biggest and best U20 gathering of all times.
Be there or ?
-
Mark, sorry it took so long to answer. For some reason I could not reply.
Anyway, in order to do this properly you need to have 2 sailmakers, 2 boat builders and a shop teacher. I figure that was just about enough brain to equal 1 normal person :)
Abbott's have a 40' mast trailer that we used. We put Pearson's boat on first ass first at a slight angle. We had his boat just on shop cart/cradle. Then our boat went on, on our trailer with the wheels off. it was bow forward and angled as well then pushed as far forward as we could to give the "yin/yang" look.
We then strapped the heck out of them. We had the Honour tin rig under the boats strapped to the trailer and Putz's carbon rig was up on his boat. I have been seeing a bunch of 5th wheel car haulers that I think would be awesome for trucking U-20's or Vipers around. I think you could get at least two on those if not three. You might look at that.
All this took about an hour and half to set up.
Worked very well behind the big diesel van. We did blow up some tires but that was a fender issue if I remember correctly. When Brad gets back from SD I will have him pipe up as well.
BTW, I have bought part of Dr. Mike's boat so that it will sail at the NA's.
Cheers

If I were doing this, I would build a stacking trailer; One boat on its trailer over the 2nd boat on its trailer. We've built stacking car trailers for years. The bottom trailer should be a dual axle trailer. The advantage to doing it this way is that it would be easier to tow, and easier to launch. I would use a ramp system to load the trailers with a cantilever system with a winch or hydraulic operated rams to lift the top trailer. The masts would be strapped to the top boat. It can all be done, and it would look totally cool, but it doesn't seem to be worth the investment involved.
-
Wait a minute, just load one U20 and trailer on top of a P/U camper and tow the other one behind. There's a photo of this as U20 #62 is being hauled west to a new owner. Does anyone remember this photo? I'll try to find it.

Up to 13 committed boats for NA's. Anymore from Canada? I agree with Don Corey. We need to support Mike Bremer. He has travelled all over going to everyones regattas.

Brian J from here in Sarnia told me last night he is planning on doing the regatta.

Great! Haven't seen Brian in years!

I am very disappointed that I must recall my "I'm in" for NAs. I will be unable to attend.

Nate,
Sorry to hear that. I was looking forward to seeing you again. Hope all is well.

Okay my plans are set and I will be attending the NA's with Rich Hunt and my wife representing the D. I have rented a home between the club and the light house on the beach. I have an extra bedroom with a queen size bed if there is someone interested. I'm sure there are some couches or if you bring an air matress there should be room for a team. You may contact me here or at keithrziegler@comcast.net.

From Dr. Mike
We have a number of others who are on the "committed" list as well as several not on that list. Just a reminder, Holland is a summer vacation destination. We have a block of rooms on hold at a lower rate at the Holland Double Tree Inn until July 10 2011. After July 10 the special rate expires. You can find the group code and instructions for reservations at the regatta web site u20championships.com. Other hotels are listed as well. Hotels are filling up fast so just a reminder for those who have not reserved their hotel rooms yet.

How/Where do I register for this regatta?

We have rented a house and have room for another crew of 3. If interested let me know. Here is the Link:From Wednesday to Monday would be only $150 per person for the entire time (sweet deal).

One of my crew will not be arriving until late Thursday night. She can't make the weigh in until Friday morning. Will it be possible to complete the weigh in then? I emailed Mike directly with no response.
-
No problem!
-
Unfortunately, Goombay Smash (The boat) will not make North Americans due to repairs from the HOOK Race. My wife and I will be in attendance for the class meeting and festivities.
-
Packing the boat for the 18 hour drive.
Took a look at the weather today and it looks like we will have plenty of wind! I hope Brad and Tac bring plenty of tape and needles!
-
Regarding the request for Committment...Ken and I are already committed and as part of our 7 step program at the Royal Ottawa Hospital they are giving us a weekend pass to go to Holland for the U-20 NA's...yippeeeeee. Have to try to remember to behave though... so please do what you can to help us remember this important detail. Will be debuting an all-new rock-star-bad-boy crew at this regatta featuring JP Landart and Ian Torrie. Needless to say, we are doing our part to pray for wind!
See you in Holland :o)

Here in Holland getting the ride ready. Spruced her up with some soap and water. Got my Trinny crew splicing new halyards and control lines. Will start sailing tomorrow afternoon. Can't way to see the rest of you here!
Bring on the BIG BIG Breeze :)
Tac
-
We're getting packed to make the hike. Like Tac we're hoping for the big breeze, and maybe drag a few on you back to Kingston for big breeze at CORK two weeks later.
-
Okay so as of this morning it is offical, I have titled hull number 173. I have been working like a dog to get the boat up to racing condition. I will still be sailing the nationals on Rich Hunt's boat, but am letting a group of kids that are part of the club boat program at BYC use the boat for the nationals. If there is any objection please let me know asap. And yes I will be joining the class association on my own outside of BYC.

Congrats and bring them with!!!
-
Congratulations on the new boat Keith. I hope you did a proper christening. More boats on the line is a good thing, especially kids on boats.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone this weekend. We will be pulling in Thursday morning.
I have an extra dinner ticket if anyone is interested.
-
Living vicariously through you guys this weekend, please post play by play!

First day had great conditons with 12 knots of wind but a 3 ft swelland a current that was unexpected on such a huge lake. Tac Boston showed the fleet the way with 4 bullets and Jim pearson was close behind evry race. New owner Kieth ziegler had 4 very consistant races putting him in third with 5 boats close behind. It is currently raining with a forecast of scattered thunderstorms. All teams are hope to apply the sharing of information lead by Tac after the racing yesterday. Hopefully we are not kept at the dock and get some racing in.
-
I miss not being there so keep us posted and sail fast! Can we get the standings after today. Saturday?
-
Tac has 6 points in first, Jim Pearson has 12 points in second, Kieth Ziegler's in third with 25 points. Two races today with strong storms hitting in a shortened second race.
-
Day 2. After 2 hours under postponement and a trip across the lake on the Redline water taxi. The decision was made to head out. The race committee saw a hole in the weather and we might just sneak 2 races in. The weather looked like it was cooperating and the sun was shining with a 13 knot breeze that was freshening. Teams were anxious and the first start resulted in a general recall. Teams regrouped and once again everyone went left looking for better breeze and wave relief. Rollers had formed during the morning and driving into 4-5 swells proved to be a challenge. Once again Tac Boston and his team showed the way with Jim Pearson closely following in second. Kieth Ziegler and the kids from bayview on Kieth's new boat were close behind. Junta, rumbulion, redline, Scram Pocket Rocket all rounded in a pack. The kite run was great with boats hitting double digit speeds. Tac finished first Slippery second. Kieth third and Free ride forth. The second race of the day started the same as the first. Nitro and Dragon Bait were over early and had to head back but we all headed off on a 15 knot breeze. After another pounding upwind we enjoyed a ripping downwind run. Tac still lead the fleet with Slippery second. I was not able to look arouind but I think Rumbulion and Kieth Ziegler were next around followed by Scram, Junta, and Redline. Ominous cloulds appeared on the horizon as we were pounding toward the windward mark. It was a race to see if we could round the weather mark before the weather hit. Twelve boats finished a shortened course as a huge sky consuming rolling black cloud approached. Some smart skippers bailed for the race thinking they could not outrun the storm. At this point we should have created a speed challenge because the best speeds of the day were recored on the run back to the breakwater. With some reproted speeds of 14 knots under main alone with all crew huddled at the stern. The fleet was hit with the full brunt of the storm. Instantly the boats who were left outside the breakwater were instantly on their side. Looking around all 14 boats were blown over• Redline had a crew washed off the boat and stranded in the water. A mayday was called for the MOB. The Bayview boys on #173 lost their rig and the Coast Guard had them drop the rig over the side because it was wrapped around the keel. A total of 3 mayadays were called. The fleet sailed in with jibs and partial mains doing 5 knots.
A great banquet followed with lots of Rum and beer to dry everyone out.
A high pressure low is predicted for tomorrow with more wind.

An email from a local in Holland that witnessed the storm that hit the race course on Saturday.

I looked up Ultimate 20 Nationals after taking a video on Aug 13th in Holland, Michigan where a U20 race was caught in a dramatic and fast approaching storm. We own a webcam facing Lake Michigan and also a weather station that clocked wind gusts up to 53 mph as the U20's headed for shore. You might enjoy seeing the video . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrqUWIq9HDw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrqUWIq9HDw)
We were surprised they could weather such a storm without capsizing. Apparently the biggest problems were things like a broken mast or rudder. We were very impressed with the boat and the people manning them.

Who can I get full res copies of the 2011 NA pics from that are now posted on the u20 website?
