Announcing the 2012 U20 North Americans will be held May 17th - 20th, 2012 in Pensacola, Florida at Pensacola Yacht Club. Start making your plans for this event now. Let's make this a big showing as the Gulf Yachting Association is looking for a new fleet boat.
Let's show them what an awesome boat and class we have!!!!
Go Ultimate 20!!!
-
Okay then, let U20 #159 team 'scram' be the first to commit. We're planning on being there.
-
I am so happy to see the nationals return to Pensacola. Over the next few months I will be posting alot of information about Pensacola and the surrounding area. In addition to the Nationals in May PYC is also looking to invite the U20 fleet for a winter date in February or March. This will be in conjuction with the Flying Tiger Fleet and possibly the Vipers. For those who like to winter in the south they have plenty of dry storage space available and have promised very reasonable dry storage fees. The Pensacola area boast world class beaches, including Perdido Key, Orange Beach and Pensacola Beach. There are many beach front houses and condos for rent during this period at very reasonable rates. Pensacola is also the home for the Blue Angels flight team. For those who enjoy camping Grand Lagon State Park is nearby, as well as camping in a very nice camp ground on NAS Pensacola for those who have military base privilages. The average temperature in May are lows in the mid 60's and highs in the mid 80's. I will be reminding you guys of this happy fact in January. A typical early May sailing day in Pensacola will feature a light shore breeze in the morning and a short transitional period mid morning. After the sea breeze fills in we typically see 15 to 18 in the heart of the afternoon. Good sailing for now and I'll be back with more on Pensacola soon. Billy Ellis.
-
Good time of the year for NA's...now I've got to find a U20...or try to get a crew spot on someone's boat.
-
Billy,
Would you please tell us exactly where the racing will be held? A map with markings would be nice. Would I be correct in assuming it will be in the bay and not offshore? Are there currents to deal with? If so, would you please provide detailed info on the currents for those of us not familiar with the venue?
thank you,
Cliff

#173 is planning on being there. Can we get the class web site updated to show next years location?
Also I am looking for another crew to split a condo as I have done alot of flying tigers in Pensacola and there are usally some good deals floating around.

-
Keith,
Do you have a name for your boat yet? NA's site Posted. Content to be added as we get closer!
Gregg
-
Cliff, The racing will take place in the main of Pensacola Bay, not offshore. You can view the chart at:
http://www.nauticalflorida.com/nautical-charts/pensacola-bay.html
PYC is located at the mouth of Bayou Chico.
-
Billy,
Thanks for the info. The chart doesn't show any currents and I looked at some tide predictions for the dates of the NA's. The difference between low and high tide on those dates is only 1-1.2 feet. I'm guessing that won't cause any noticeable currents out in the middle of the bay. Would that be a correct assumption?
I'm strictly a lake sailor so I don't know much about coastal issues. Is there anything else we should know about sailing in this venue? With winds of 15 of 18 knots, as you mentioned, how is the chop or waves?
If my questions seem strange, it's because the drive from Colorado to Pensacola is 1500+ miles and I want to make sure I make a good decision about whether or not to go. The more info I have, the better chance I have of making a good decision about whether or not my skills are suitable to the venue.
all the best,
Cliff
-
Cliff, There are currents to consider as there are pretty much any place that is affected by tide. By no means are they anywhere as challaging as you might find in areas such as San Francisco Bay, or even the Chesapeake. As you noted the 1 to 1.5' tides we experiance on the northern Gulf Coast are rather minimal compared to other places. I am sure there will be a briefing concerning tides befor we start racing. As far as wave action I would guess that our waves are really no different than those on your lake. Pensacola Bay is well protected on all sides. That is why it became a favorite hurricane hole for the Spanish when they were exporing the area. We often have regattas on much smaller boats at the same area we will race in. These include flying scotts, thistles, and lightnings so an U20 should really romp here. I also suspect that you will find the wind more consistant than what you are accustomed to. No sudden downdrafts with 30 degree shifts for example. As we say down here, come on in the waters great!!!
-
Alright! Team JUNTA is in. I am already missing sailing.
-
Add Slippery to list of boats that will be there.

Pending completion of my work calendar and hoping for no conflicts, I'm in.
-
my team is planning on being there with 38 again.
Are there going to be any other events in Florida this winter? Seems kind of a dead winter?
-
Tac,
I was trying to see if we could get enough boats for Charleston, but I dont' know how many we can get as it being so close to the NA's. Another idea would be New Orleans one design if somehow we can generate enough interest. It's only about four hours from Pensacloa. As I remember Pensacola has a huge yard where we could store the boats until the NA's. I would like to do 2 trips if possible this winter. Let me know what you think.

St. Petes Nood could be other option but for some reason a lot do not care to go there anymore. I always thought it was a pretty good venue. I could do that one.

I don't think I can do Charleston but could do NOOD, other then I really hate the RC work there. Mardi Gras, I will do if you can get your brother to sponsor my team :) You know what I'm talking about :)
what are the others thinking? What not just do another event in Pens?
-
Just go the attached notice of race..... What are the thoughts on this regatta?
-
I wanted to start booking housing. Where is a good plce to stay for the NA's. If you were going to rent a house is Pensacola beach too far and is there something closer?
Thanks - Mark
-
mark,
definetly stay on the beach. that's where all the good bars are! a friend of mine owns the paradise motel and they also do home rentals on the beach. i think they have a website. there is a small toll fee for the bridge every time you cross going onto the island. i really want to make this one if i can get enough $$$$ together. i met my wife at peglegs bar 20+ years ago. i'm hoping her uncles beach house isn't rented at that time. sure would make a nice homebase for festivities. fingers crossed!

Pensacola is having a sportkeelboat onedesign regatta in early Feb. Putting the French Quarter aside a much nicer place to sail for an Ultimate 20. Having said that if you guys want to go to NO I'm in.
-
After taking a much needed break from the taking the boat on the road, You Sassy B! is ready to hit the road again. I'm in for NA's and Charleston. And Lake Norman. And the mug race in Jacksonville.
Billy, is the venue Goombay Smash blender-friendly?

-
Steve you said that you would be bringing both Sassy and Sissors. Who is racing Sissors?
-
The Seattle NOOD 2011 U20 Champions. Anna and Addi! Assisted by Mark and Nate. That is if everything works according to plan. So if my New Years resolution doesn't work out...How do we get a weight waiver?

Steve you said that you would be bringing both Sassy and Scissors. Who is racing Scissors?
Team Selstad/Dobie. Also just ordered Doyle/Boston sails for Sassy and Scissors.
-
Will Registered Boats for NA's be updated shortly. Sounds like there is more than 7 boats planning on attending. It is time to start getting after guys who might be on the fence and push this Regatta. Class really needs a good turnout.

The two links provided are for Perdido Key and Pensacola Beach vacation rentals by owner. Pensacola Beach has a more lively atmosphere. Both are about a 1/2 hour from PYC.

I have confirmed with PYC that RV's and campers are welcome to stay on thier grounds.

If you have not made plans to be at North American's this year..... Make them.... Let's have the best turn out ever... Come out of hiding! If you have not indicated that you are coming, let us know! If your not on this list, you should be!!! http://u20class.org/NorthAmericans/2012NA/RegisteredBoats.html
-
I just heard the other day that Brian Johansson is planing on going again.
-
I believe Honour has stated that they are doing Charleston and NA's. That would make 16 boats. There has to be a few more from Lake Norman. Certainly we can reach 20+ boats.

8) Registration is now open and the NOR is posted..... Let the games begin!!!

Now that things are starting to heat up I would appreciate any input as to extra curricular activitys that have popular in the past or create a tradition for the future. One comes to mind is a bar keeper throwdown. Steve Rose can challange the PYC to a goombay smash throwdown and they can follow up with a bushwacker challange? Of course the sailors get to judge. It will be likely that the Blue Angels will hold a practice session on Wednesday Morning at 8:30 AM. Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum provide front row seating to view these sessions. It's like having a private viewing of the whole show! http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/PlanYourVisit/Activities-(1)/BlueAngelsPractices.aspx.

Hey committed boats! Let's get registered... Look at this list!
http://u20class.org/NorthAmericans/2012NA/RegisteredBoats.html
Looks like it is going to be a great turn out! Don't miss this one! If you are not on the list, get on the list!!! :P
-
22 boats committed, 12 registered!!! This is gonna be big!!!
Let's go, Let's go!!!
-
Please note that I will be sailing #25 'fore' in the NACs. Thanks, Don
-
So Noted and Updated! :)
-
Just a reminder that early registration ends on March 1st. Get off the fence and save some money! We've got 12 registered so far with 22 on the committed list. Lets keep the momentum going!

T-Shirts and Food Order Form (Attachment A from NOR) is now posted ...

Is anyone interested in sharing a rental lodging in Pensacola for the NA’s? I did this with another crew in Dillon 2010, and it was financially and logistically rewarding.
-
Just registered! Also made reservations at the NavyLodge which google maps reports ia only 3 miles from yachtclub. If you have DoD privledges it is only $75 per night with 2 queens and a kitchen (can't be beat).

Hi All, to date we have twenty three committed to attend the NAs in Pensacola which at this early date could mean we break our two time record of twenty four for this event. This is a terrific venue and I urge you all to attend. As an incentive for those on the fence about attending, Doyle Boston Sailmakers and Ultimate Sales East is offering a door prize of a beautiful new blue/white/blue Doyle Boston class spinnaker to be randomly drawn from all registered attending skippers and delivered at the event. So far we have boats from Canada (2), CO (4), MI (3), CA (1), OH (1), IL (1), MN (1), KS (2), SC (2), AL (2), NC (3) and FL (1).
I've sailed in twelve of the past thirteen NAs and they all have been memorable and well worth the effort.
Come join us.

I have some questions about the NAs.
What type of event shirt is being offered? Do they run true-to-size, larger or smaller?
Is a Wednesday night arrival recommended?
Is the Thursday 'Cookout' a lunch or dinner affair?
The NOR refers to a Sunday Awards dinner, but the food order form says Awards Lunch. Can someone clarify?
-
Michael,
I will arrive Thursday AM.
Thursday is a dinner.
Sunday is a Lunch.
Shirts, Billy will have to answer that one!

We just had our annual J/24 Easter Regatta here in Columbia with twenty-five J/24's racing. The Columbia U20 fleet, having raced on a J/24, knew these sailors would be in serious need of a drink or two after racing each day. Both Friday and Saturday, they finished off 2 batches of the official U20 drink, the Goombay Smash. There was a new item on the menu, Saturday night, The Goombay Smash Sno-Cone. They seemed to over quite well.
Looking forward to the NA's!

Don, I'll put you down an advance order of Fno Cones.

Put me down for a Fno Cone too! :o
-
We now have 20 registered and in the barn. Lets make it 25!!
-
Boom we now have 21. Lets find a few more!!
-
Today we got one more! Thats 22. Lets shake the trees and get 25!

Two years ago I made a total of 16 Mast Lift assist assemblies as seen on this YouTube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c-3knkxrqg
I have 3 assemblies left that are available for purchase. I doubt I'll be making any more as it takes a quantity order to build them at an affordable price. The price of the mast lift assembly is $350, but for anyone that is participating at the North Americans that may want one, the price will be $300 delivered to Pensacola Yacht Club. If anyone is interested, please lat me know ASAP so I can pack them for the trip East. First Come First Served.
-
Mike's mast lifting device is great. I have seen several and this is by far the best design. I used to raise and lower the rig myself and it was always a bit dicey, especially on the way down. This takes all of the excitement out and makes it extremely easy and safe. Best U20 accessory out there.
-
Billy,
Are the sailing instructions ready to go? the NOR states they will be posted online after March 1st.
Thanks,
Mark

The Selstad/Dobie Crew has failed to make our weight goals for U20 NAs in Pensacola. As stated in my message of January 5th, 2012 we require a weight wavier.
Our crew on Running with Scissors (owned by Steve Rose) will consist of:
Nate Selstad age 42 wt 188 (30 pouinds less than 1/5/12!)
Addi Selstad age 15 wt 135
Mark Dobie age older than Nate!!! wt 210
Anna Dobie age 14 wt 100
Which leaves us at 633lbs, I was hoping for 180 by NAs and Mark was shooting for 190 which would have had us well under. This waiver request is so that we might sail with our daughters in a OD event which has become a tradition of ours starting last year with the Seattle NOODS.
If any one has objection please reply here...
Thank you
Nate

I approve.... Family is Forever! ;D
-
I approve as well. The future of U20 sailing!
-
I am good with it.
-
Hey Mark,
Sorry you are correct about the S I's. I have emailed them to Greg to post. Basically warning at 11:55 courses to be windward leward either 2 or 2.5 loops around. The leward end of the course will have a gate as opposed one single mark.

Thanks to everyone who drove many miles and hours to come to Pensacola. You guys continue to make the U20 class one of the fast and friendliest around. Congrats to Jim Pearson for demonstrating why he is at the top of the class. Looks like I need to start perfecting the roll jibe.
-
Everyone should hear how awesome Billy Ellis is!!!
So after the Regatta the Sassy B/Scissors convoy had to head out before we could fufill the promise to my daughter Addison to take her to the beach. Billy heard this, disconnected his boat and took the time to take her to the Beach engaged in conversation the whole way, then he got us to the airport.
Great job on the whole weekend but your willingness to share time with my family when I know it would have been ideal for you to leave your boat connected and get headed home was the apex of the hospitality demonstrated all weekend. I appreciated your time and valued your knowledge of Pensacola. Addison wants to take a "regular vacation" to Pensacola soon.
Thanks Again,
Nate
p.s. The PYC is pretty awesome as well
-
I would like to thank Billy and the rest of the organizers and owners for providing a great venue for the class championships. I look forward to seeing all of you next year in California. It's not that far. I'm just finishing a quick 'Turn & Burn', and will be in LA tonight, Monday.

Great seeing you all at PYC and hope to see you all again soon.

Actually Greg, a little thanks does not go near far enough. Your dedication to the U20 fleet is nothing short of amazing. Thank you for your many years of service to keep this the fast and friendliest fleet around.
