Title: furler question

My jib does not want to furl properly. The bottom furls but the top lags behind. It has gotten to the point that it will not furl in anything but light air including going downwind. I have completely taken it apart, cleaned the bearings and the innerparts, sprayed with McLube and reasymbled. To the eye everything looks good. The swivel seems to spin freely in my hand and even works underload of headstay tension. As soon as you add the jib to the equation it does not work properly. Has anybody had simillar issues?

I have the same thing happening with mine.  Over the past few years, even after the complete overhaul being performed several times - I am wondering if the bearings have lost their shape and might try replacing those.

I replaced the upper swivel. Problem solved.

I re-built my upper furler a few years back.  The ball bearings had elongated and were no longer spherical...causing it to bind a little while under load.  I contacted Harken (262) 691-3320 and ordered out the following parts:  MP-126, Ball Bearing-1/2in TOR (HSB17), and HSB205, Smalley Ring - WSM-106-S02.  Total cost a couple years ago was about $37.  With a little bit of patience putting the bearing in the track, I have an upper furler that now works great!  Sorry, I don't have the part number for replacing the entire upper furler.

Thank you for getting back, Dean. Is it a bearing assembly or loose balls? Did you get one of each like this?

1 x MP-126, Ball Bearing-1/2in TOR (HSB17)
1 x HSB205, Smalley Ring - WSM-106-S02

Is the bearing 1/4" or 1/2"?

Thanks for pointing out the typo.  Should read: MP-126, Ball Bearing - 1/4in TOR (HSB17).  These are 1/4 inch loose balls.
