Announcing the 2013 U20 North Americans will be held September 12-15 in Marina Del Ray, CA at Del Ray Yacht Club in association with South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club. Start making your plans for this event now. The website and registration details should be up soon.
Visit www.dryc.org
or
www.sccyc.org
for site details.
Our new builder WD Schock has offered free boat storage for anyone interested.
Let's make this a fantastic event!

The correct name of the club is "Del Rey Yacht Club". I'll be your primary contact if you need any assistance or information. Late summer is an excellent time to race in Marina Del Rey with virtually a 100% certainty of days in the 70s and steady 10-15 knot winds out of the WSW. I look forward to seeing everyone. The main DRYC phone number is (310) 823-4664. My contact info is WK (818) 701-1923 and my cell is (818) 515-9800. Michael Eisenberg

Count this North Carolina crew in for the NACs. Made hotel reservations today. Have no idea what hull # we'll be sailing but hopefully by then in the upper 250's. Yes, new W.D. Schock built U20s are available for this event and eariler if needed, so give me a call for more info if interested.

I will be up in marina del Rey this weekend. I will check for some hotels. What does the populous prefer? The airport is about ten minutes south. There are hotels in or near the marina. Jamaica bay inn comes to mind which is in the marina walking distance from the club. Kinda pricey for my taste but nice. O I could try to find some boats to crash on.
-
#26 JUNTA is in.
Are house rentals a possibility or hotels the way to go? Near the marina and the action is preferred. The less anyone has to drive the better.
-
Gregg, we're staying at the Marriott on Admiralty Way overlooking the marina. Not exactly cheap.
-
I used to sail in Marina del Rey. Thought that the attached Marina del Rey Racing Course Chart may be of benefit to the participants and race committee as you plan for the event. It shows the marks already in place and their corresponding distances and positions. You may, more than likely, be using some of the marks.
Kind regards.
-
We'll be setting tetrahedron marks off of the Venice pier. It is more appropriate for a regatta of this caliber. And I believe Cal YC is running the Harris Series using the fixed marks that weekend.
-
As long as we don't conflict with the AC races in SF, team Uhoo! Will be there.

Layla plans to be there. I am glad that we were able to find a good West Coast location after Santa Cruz stumbled. Looking forward to some SoCal ocean racing!

Logistics questions:
It looks tentatively like we will arrive late Monday night. What are the logistics to get into the club and park the boat?
It looks like there is a local club race Wednesday evening. Any chance the U20s can get a start at the end of the locals for this race as a tune-up race?
From the weight limitation, it sounds like the hoist is not a big deal for the U20, please confirm Glenn and Michael use it?
Jay

The club has a new pass card entry system that generates a new key pad entry number every week or so. I think I will be able to get the key pad number as we get closer to the event.
Cal Yacht Club runs the Sunset Series. They may add a class after the existing classes. The issue is if they do, the last start is around 6:30. It'll be a short race. The later classes to start usually get a 3.5 mile race. That usually consists of .5 mile upwind, .75 miles downwind with spinnaker and another 2 miles inside the harbor with no spinnaker allowed. The PHRF D class starts earlier and usually gets a 4.5-6.5 mile race. The time limit is 8:30. I won't be there as I will be returning from Watkins Glen, New York.
I use the hoist all the time. I set my sling up to put the bow down just a little to make sure the mast clears the hoist.
-
Great. Thanks Michael. Congratulations on NOODs btw. Looks like that was good sailing.

Jay,
There are three hoists and on public launch ramp in marina del Rey. Del Rey and California yacht club offer more secured parking. South coast Corinthian yacht club (the co-host) is more open grounds. All hoists capable of launching u20s no problem. I keep our boat in the mast up storage at the public launch ramp. Compared to the other two, south coast Corinthian is by far tiny with a one room clubhouse. But in my opinion the most friendliest club in the marina!
Cal yc has Wednesday nights and del Rey yc has Thursday night races. You can find the race schedules here:

Hi all. The North American Championships are 5 months away. Registration documents are posted on the U20 web site. I'm not sure it is clear on the registration forms, but the $185 entry fee ($175 for early entry) includes the BBQs and dinners for all participants, and three participant shirts for each boat. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in Marina Del Rey in September.
-
So if I decide to come to the left coast from Michigan is there a chance of getting a junior sailor in the 60 to 80 pound range to race the regatta?

Is anyone looking for crew? A viper sailor asked if I knew anyone at last weekends long beach race week.

Good morning, I wanted to follow up with you regarding crewing on a U20. You mentioned a guy in MDR might need crew. I would be glad to travel their for meeting them, practice, whatever. I have a resume available upon request also.
Thanks,
Dennis

Hi Everyone.
The Ultimate 20 Championship regatta is about 2 months away. Marina Del Rey, located in the heart of Southern California, and in the Santa Monica Bay, is a fantastic sailing location in late summer. Please take a moment to sign up for this regatta at https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_registration_form.php?regatta_id=6586 . It will help with advance planning if we know who is going to attend.
General information is available at http://www.dryc.org/RACING/Ultimate-20-Championship.aspx
I look forward to seeing the usual faces (and transoms) in September.

Thanks for the nudge Mike - we have it on our calendar and I am pretty sure Jay Harland is coming from OR.
-
Mike,
Thanks for the prodding, I am registered.
Looking forward to racing...
I talked to Tom Hughes and I believe Too Tuff is planning to race.
Curious what are the rest of the left coast boats intentions Viola?, Breakaway?, Uhoo?, Uagain?, Ricochet?, Cinderella Story?, Salsa?, etc.

Jay, Tom, Mike,
Please send emails, call, carrier pigeon those on your list to come to the NA's. We need the support of the California boats. Register today!
Mark
-
Salsa is out for this one. I did hear Uhoo say he was using the H.O. Lind series as practice for the crew he'll be sailing with for the NA's, so I'm pretty sure he is in. Haven't heard anything from the new Cinderella Story owners since the Andrews sold.
-
Bob Comstock sailed at Huntington in Ultimate Antics, ex-Cinderella Story. He told me that he isn’t going to make Marina Del Rey. He does plan to make many of the Nor Cal events in the future. Layla is still in for the NAs and will register shortly.
-
VP is registared, will be making the long journey starting the Saturday before. Condo booked next door to the club with one of those evil North Carolina teams.

I have my tickets...getting into LAX at 9:20 PM on Thursday!
-
Who are you sailing with? I will bring your oakjacked.

Gregg, I had planned on you racing with me. But if Jim needs you I could find someone local. Probably easier for me to find someone than Jim.
-
Glenn, Jim,
I appreciate the invites... I would be thrilled to race with either of you.
Glenn has made arrangements for me to stay on a J92. Glenn let me know if you have a local to race with you.
Thanks to you both.

Glenn, Gregg
I have no crew a this point so Glenn I would like to take you up on your offer to take on Gregg if you can pickup a local crew from your connections out there.
Let me know if this is agreeable so we can plan on it.
Thanks Guys

Once again I want everyone to know that Rich Hunt your class measurer is planning on coming out for the regatta. Spoke with him the other evening and he was looking into flights. If you need crew you should give him a shout.

Another issue...is food for the shore crew? It looks like we have hosted meals Friday and Saturday nights for skipper and two crew. Both my wife and my crew's wife are coming down to watch the circus and obviously we want them to eat with us those nights. Who/how much do we pay for those additional meals?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jay

Keith
I gave Rich a call and left a message a couple days ago and have heard nothing back. I'll try him again tomorrow. I may have an old number. What is his current number?
-
Jay,

Rumbullion is registered and paid (finally). It would be good to know the array of meals, prices and what is included/additional to the registration fee. Can we get a posting on this with a selection sheet to be sent to Tucker Strasser?
We are looking forward to a great regatta. Thanks to Don Corey for carting our sails etc across the US!

Re-visit the event by reviewing the photos of the weekend and going to Francine’s Website.
Once there select the U20 2013 NA’s folder.
Francine did a great job here for the class and our NA’s so please consider support her efforts.

It is with much sadness that I must report that Dennis Martinelli, my forward crew for the 2013 NAs, passed away unexpectantly this week. He put the "TEAM" in teamwork, and I would not have won without him. Words can not describe the pleasure I had sailing with him, or the sadness I feel now.
-
Our thoughts and prayers are with you! It is always hard when we lose one of our fellow sailors! Smooth Sailing, Dennis!
-
OMG!! I'm in shock and had no idea that Dennis had passed. He was a good friend of mine. what a sad sad loss of a great friend. Michael if you have any further information please pass it on to me. Jim@Juiceplusnorthamerica.com

Sorry to hear that Michael. You guys were obviously a good team. Everyone who races small sportboats knows that the friendships with teammates are what makes the boats go and good times flow.

Jim, I got a non-receipt bounce-back on a PM I sent you. Reply if you did not get an email from me last week.
