Title: Long-distance racing

Does anyone have experience with a long-distance race (and RC)?

We were planning to do a 40 NM race. The race would easily be a single-day, and the course is generally along the shore. We had to back out at the last minute due to a conflict; but the RC never really resolved whether they would allow a 20' sport boat anyway. (Seems silly to get yourself to the start line only to find out that you're ineligible).

There are a few obvious pieces of equipment that we're missing per ISAF Offshore Cat. 4 (25-Watt VHF; permanently-installed head; permanently-installed water tank). However, given the distance of the race, and the distance from shore for this race, these items seem rather insignificant to me.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any idea what the general "safety" concerns would be? Any suggestions on how to approach the RC to overcome their concerns?

I have done many distance races with my U20 including a 189nm race.  I am running into the same problem with restrictions now.

I have done the Bayview North Channel Race which is 56 nm and the race is 30ft and under boats only. Lots of Megi 24's, a few Ecthell's. Only thing I had to do was temp running lights. I would do it again if I could find a way to clear the keel of weeds as the race is late Sept.

I raced the Border Run single handed twice from Newport to San Diego.  I think it's about 90 miles.  The R/C let me carry 2 hand helds, in case one failed.  They had no head requirements, but I carry a Port-a-Pottie.  Thy let me carry 5 gallons of fresh water in a dedicated strong water container strapped to the mast support tube.  BTW I use a Raymarine ST1000 Tiller pilot when single handing.  It works really nicely.

Thanks guys. I'm trying not to think that "safety" issues really means "our trophy may not be safe if we let in the sport boats" ;-)

Keith, I'll be keeping an eye on the BYC distance races. Would love to do a dash across St. Clair.
