Title: PCC Venue and Dates
Post by: Jay Harland on February 19, 2015, 12:33:23 AM
All west coast U20s- please answer the new poll on the forum for PCC venue and date options.  After considerable discussion with class leadership these two options are the leading candidates.  The poll allows you to select both options if either date/venue works for you.  The venue and date with the most interest is the one that will likely be selected.  If one date is good for your team and the other is possible not definite then answer "commit" for the date you know works and "may" for the date that is possible but not for sure.  If a day becomes definite you can change your vote.

This poll will run for 21 days starting February 18th and close on March 11th.  Class leadership will make a final selection and notify the class shortly after the poll closes.

Please Vote!

Thank you Jay! Richmond sounds like fun - will advise and perhaps change from our current 'maybe' vote in October, after we see how the Big Daddy goes for us in a few weeks.

Here's my pitch for Richmond:

Beyond this PCC-
-The Great Pumpkin Regatta is Oct 24/25.  You can race one-design Sat and on Sun in phrf against 160+ boats in a pursuit race against some of the best sailors around.
-Midwinters begin the first Sun of the month starting in Dec.  Spend a day in SF and a day on the water once a month.
-Winter sailing in San Francisco is calmer and actually warmer than in the summer.  We already have a couple out-of-town boats that sail here for winter-only regattas.  Why not you?
- $120/mo gets you a dry dock spot and use of an electric cart to pull your boat to the crane.  No need to bring your truck.
-Come for the PCC and leave your boat for the winter.

The Richmond Yacht Club just sent out a Notice on the Sportboat Regatta in October;

Richmond Yacht Club

Sport Fest Invitational
Oct. 10 & 11

The organizers at Richmond Yacht Club are designing a regatta in the Fall for you. I have attached a flyer but more details will be forthcoming soon. Right now we are testing the waters to see what interest is out there and to expand the mailing list.
The Open 570 fleet are hosting their Nationals and sail on Monday Oct. 12th as well. That’s Columbus Day and if anyone else wants to sail, all the better.    Del Olson will be the PRO for the Regatta on the Southampton Course.

Dinner will be available for Friday and Saturday evening at the Club.

Looks like RYC sportboat event in October has won out on the voting and we would look to have 10 or more boats which would be good.  Mike Josselyn will provide periodic updates as the event nears.

I would also posit that the Fern Ridge interest was high enough that maybe that should be the venue in 2016, depending on where and when NA's will be next year as they return out west.

The other question is whether we want to sail Monday as well.  I would vote yes to that it is possible but I would want to hear from other boats.

Who says what?

Richmond will be a great venue - we are questionable on making this, but if we can make it, we would most likely be a Sat-Sun attendee.

I could go either way.  I am guessing for most, Saturday Sunday is preferable.

The Richmond Yacht Club is pleased to invite the west coast U20 owners and crew to the Ultimate 20 Pacific Cup Championship and annual Sportboat Fest to be held on Columbus Day weekend, October 10-12.   An additional day of racing can be arranged for Monday if desired.   Del Olson, will the PRO for the event.  Del Olson is a International Canoe World Champion and current holder of the New York Cup, the oldest sailing trophy (yes older than the America's Cup), for his team's win during the International Canoe Championships held last year at RYC.  He has managed many other regattas and is the best you can get for race management.

U20s will have their own starts, but will share the windward/leeward course with 570s (which will be having their Nationals), J70s, and probably some Vipers.    All racing will be managed by an experienced team of starters, scorers, and a certified judge will be available for protests.

Registration fees have not been set; but will be very reasonable and include trophies.   I will get out the registration information as soon as it becomes available.

The Club will have dinner for the participants on Friday nite and Saturday nite, with open bars on both nights.  While it will be under renovation, the Club will be open.

Boats must have a bridle for launching via a hoist.   Local boat owners can provide bridles if you do not have one.   Boats will have storage in the water for the entire event.

The San Francisco Fleet members welcome our out of town guests to this event and we will be making arrangements for a block of rooms at a local hotel for out of town skippers and crew.   Port Richmond is a historic town and lots of restaurants and bars.  West Marine also in Pt Richmond for last minute items.

More to come on this event and we look forward to hosting the PCCs and U20 participants.

We are working on the NORS and getting the web site up for the PCC in Oct at Richmond Yachr Club.  A question has come up as to interest in racing on Monday which is Columbus Day.  The 570s will be racing for their Nationals.   So it will not be any trouble for the Race Committee.   However traditionally the PCC have been two days.   Any thoughts from those who may be traveling from afar?

Also, we are including in the fee Saturday evening dinner at the Club for skipper and crew as it is easy for planning purposes, but let me know if any objections.  Family members of course will be welcome.

More to come soon for this event.

Mike

As part of the Richmond Yacht Club's Sport Boat Invitational, the U20 Class Association will be holding the Pacific Coast Championship on October 10-12.   It is promising to be a great event with racing on three days, a terrific Saturday nite dinner for skippers and crew, a special presentation by Jim Antrim the designer of our boat, and more to come.  If you are a veteran or haven't yet been to a PCC, it is great fun to get together with fellow U20 sailors and is well worth the travel.  Hope you can make it for some great racing on the Bay in what is the best time of year for the U20.

If you are attending the PCCs at the Richmond Yacht Club and have a non-sailing spouse, relative, or friend coming with you, they can watch the races on the water and also help with race committee on the committee boat.  It's a great opportunity to see how a race is run and how you are doing during race!  Let me know if you are interested.  Can be one, two,or all three days.  No experience necessary.

Just a note on logistics for the Richmond Yacht Club.   The club renovation is finally starting and a temporary village of trailers and a large heated tent structure have been erected in the parking lot.   All dinning, bar, showers, and other facilities have been set up and the usual fun and friendly atmosphere of RYC will be in place by the time the PCCs start.   We will be the first regatta under the new temporary roof.   The club recently purchased a lot next door and trailer and car parking in a secure area are available.  I will be providing more details as the PCCs get closer.

Some U20 owners who are attending the PCCs have asked about boat storage.  Of course, during the regatta there will be room for trailers and cars and all boats will be kept in the marina during the race.  However, if you would like to store your boat during the winter in Richmond and participate in the Great Pumpkin and other mid-winter class events, the Brickyard Cove Marina will have space on a month to month basis.  You need to get on their "wait list" at www.bycmarina.com or call Cary Clausen at 510-236-1933.   They have a mule to bring your boat to the hoist and three U20s will be there already.

Some updates.

1.   SI should be out next week so watch for them on the regatta web site.
2.    Jeff Canepa will be joining Jim Antrim who will be speaking on Saturday nite at the dinner.   Great to have both of the "architects" of the U20 with us.
3.    Fleet Week will be going on during our regatta.   Don't get distracted by the Blue Angels flying overhead during our races on Sat and Sun
4.   Weather is predicted to be sunny and warm.   Winds will be typical fall conditions ranging between 5 and 15 knots as the afternoon sets in.
5.   Not signed up...still time to join us on the water.  13 boats signed up so far.

Congratulations to Bob Comstock, Chris Chambers, and Mark Allan and their crews!    And thank you to all the boats that traveled far to come to the Richmond Rivera and to enjoy sailing at its best on San Francisco Bay.

The 2015 Pacific Coast Championship was held at the Richmond Yacht Club on October 10-12 with 13 boats in attendance, traveling from Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Nevada, and many parts of California.   The weekend event included 3 windward/leeward races north of the Olympic Circle for each of the first two days capped off with a long distance race on the third.  The weather all through the regatta was sunny with temperatures in the upper 70s to 80s.

The first day the wind started light from the south at 5 to 10 knots, shifting to the southwest as the racing progressed, with winds between 10 and 12 knots.   With the ebbing tide, however, chop developed quickly and challenged all the racers to power through the waves heading upwind.  Downwind legs were fast, but generally under control for the fleet.  The leaders clearly established themselves with Bob Comstock (Ultimate Antics), Chris Chambers (Black Sheep), and Mark Allen (Junta) finishing in the top three on all three races.  Jay Harland (Madison) and Phil Kanegsberg (Udecide) also had good races.   Donna Womble (Peabody) showed strength on the first race, but was out the rest of the day when a bolt on her upper gudgeon broke.

The second day felt like the first in the morning, but then the thin finger of fog came in over Alcatraz and the wind quickly shifted towards the west and was generally between 10 to 15 knots, with stronger periods up to 20 knots.   At times, the windward mark was obscured by fog.   Of course, the chop was now higher and everyone tightened down their rigs.   The day’s stronger winds resulted in more broaches on the downwind jibes offering opportunities for a number of boats as well as more rig and gear problems for several boats resulting in retirements.  Unfortunately, a port/starboard collision took out two boats.   The Black Sheep team found a way to sail through the conditions, scoring two bullets and Udecide and David Krausz (Salsa) scoring their best of the regatta with seconds.

The third day was the distance race and was the warmest of the regatta with temperatures in the 80s.   The race started south of the Southampton mark and required a starboard rounding of Blackhaller (near the Golden Gate Bridge) and then a starboard rounding of Harding Rock, before making a choice to take the shorter route through Raccoon Straits or sail around Angel Island to the Richmond Yacht Club channel for the finish.   The wind started out from the northwest, but quickly became unstable, splitting the fleet with those heading south and those more westerly.   The westerly route won out, and as the wind built in, those that sailed down to the City front captured the ebb current to Blackhaller, reaching the windward mark quickly.  Most of the boats opted for the longer route on the return with stronger pressure.  The downwind leg was fast until hitting the lee of Angel Island and the strong ebb current.   While during the race, the separation of the boats was significant in time and distance, the first three boats all finished within boat lengths with Travis Gregory (222) winning.

The final results had Bob Comstock receiving the PCC trophy, defending champion Chris Chambers second, and previous PCC champion, Mark Allen, third.

While racing was the primary purpose of the regatta, a talk by Jim Antrim on the design and concepts behind the Ultimate 20 and how it led to other sport boats in the Antrim design series was fascinating and fun.   Jeff Canepa sailed with us on Saturday and joined us at Jim’s talk.   After each day, Mark Allen organized a chalk talk on the docks while serving cold Uinta beer so we could all talk about what made us fast or slow.  The Richmond Yacht Club served great dinners from their temporary “village” while the main building is under renovation.   Dan Irwin (Wasaaabi) sponsored a renaming ceremony for his boat with libations and a proper ceremonial reading.  Being Fleet Week, there was lots of activity on and over the water, with the Blue Angels flying on each day, though few of us had time to notice them while racing.   The real winner of the regatta was perhaps Craig Smith at Elkhorn Composites where three boats headed for repairs and deferred maintenance!

Results are in.   Congratulations to Bob Comstock (Ultimate Antics) for a consecutive win.   Of course, he has been sailing the lake for 45 years, so we think he found out some secrets others don't know--especially the depth to the sandbar between the islands!  Great job, though, with five bullets despite some very stiff competition with boats finishing within seconds of each other.
