Title: racing when it is too hot in the South
Post by: Joe Brase on April 04, 2016, 08:44:32 PM
Hard to believe, but it is getting warm in the South.
I am new to the fleet and am wondering, if there are any regional races in the New England or Mid West area during July-August when it is too hot to sail down here.

Hey Joe,  might want to check out the Wednesday Night Series run by Outrigger Yacht Club here on Lake Norman starting April 27 and running thru August 24.  It can be warm later in the season with light to moderate air but generally fun to sail in the evening on a U20 which have been very successful over the years in this event.

Joe, Bayfield Race Week is a great time.  It is in the Apostle Islands during the week of the 4th of July.  Steve Rose tows his boat up for South Carolina every year.  Some times you race PHRF 159 or OD if there are enough boats.

Good idea although I've never done it.  Joe, get two or three other U20s from our local fleet here on Lake Norman to do it and I'd make the trip up too.  Always heard great things about this event.  Fourth of July is no time to be near Lake Norman.

The fleet has a choice on which you can join at Bayfield.  Course Racing or Mid Distance.  The Course Racing fleet races two races a day.  Mid Distance, one race.  The Mid Distance race can be around buoys or around islands or both.  Parties every night with daily trophies from local artists.  Book rooms early as they fill up quickly.

Looking into it. 20 hrs drive is not for the faint hearted.
I assume there is room to camp/RV on site?

I kind of wish I wasn't the co-chair of the LNYC Independence Day regatta; I would have made the trip.

There are campsites nearby.
