Title: Masthead spinnaker for PHRF

Post by: Tac Boston on August 26, 2020, 01:39:22 PM: Mike with your mast I would not hesitate in building a MH kite for your boat. The Forte rig is so stiff that I would not worry at all. We did a MH kite with a flat top for Jim Pearson on Slippery. That boat, which has since been sold, had the C Tech mast and he did put a set of backstays on just in case. I am not sure that he really needed them but he had them in case.

Do you know what kind of rating hit he took and if the juice was worth the squeeze? Not considering this as I still have an aluminum rig but I am curious.

Just wondered if it would be worthwhile. A couple of boats are faster downwind (they do have lower phrf ratings) and it would be nice to have a bit more speed downwind.

I will email Jim and ask. I know that he ended up going back to Frac kite because the changed the race course layout and it ended up with tight reaches and the boat was just plane over powered for those. We made him a reaching kite that was quite a bit small in the girths a while ago that he used most of the time. Still used the flat top main and full size PHRF jib.

We had one boat here on Lake Norman that would use some bigger sails (12 second penalty), but the boats sailing ODR would often win boat for boat.
