U20 owners and crew

If you can't bring your own boat to San Francisco Bay, think about coming to join as crew for another skipper.  Great experience on the Bay and skippers may be looking.

If you are bringing your boat or thinking about it and don't have crew available, please post on the Regattanetwork page that you are looking for crew.  You are likely to find some one who is experienced and it could save money on your crew budget.

Do it now so you can plan on attending!

For those skippers considering the trip to Richmond, CA in September and are wondering what the conditions are like, please see the attached charts.  The Richmond Yacht Club location is called the Richmond Riviera and Mid September is the warmest, sunniest, and moderate wind months of the year.  We plan on racing on the Southampton course which is protected waters due to presence of Angel Island that reduces wave height. Tidal currents during the racing will be slack to ebbing during the racing.

Hope you can join us and please let us know if you have questions related to accommodations, logistics, and venue.

The Hotel Mac in Point Richmond recently reopened and have generously offered a $35 per night discount (approximately 20%) from September 8 through September 12.  They have blocked off 10 rooms during this period to give us a chance to book.  The promo code is Ultimate 20.  You will need to call the hotel at (510) 235- 0010 to take advantage of this offer.  Desiree is our contact.  She recommends that you look at the various room options on the website before you call.  http://www.thehotelmac.com  After the one week block off period, the discount still applies but rooms would of course be subject to availability.  I expect a number of sailors will be staying at the Hotel Mac.

Another option would be an Airbnb in Point Richmond.  There are a number of rooms and houses available during our regatta.

Finally, given production lead time, I will need to place the Regatta T-shirt order early next week.  If you register by next Monday, July 18, I will be able to guarantee the sizes that you have selected at registration.  After that, we will have a limited number of sizes available.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any further information.

Thanks,

Another sponsor! .  .  . and an Event Brochure!

Happy to report that Little Louie's Café in Point Richmond has agreed to support our race committee lunches.  They are also offering all  U20 sailors a 15% discount on breakfasts and lunches during the entire month of September.  I have eaten there many times and can confirm they make excellent breakfasts and sandwiches.  This may be the first stop for many during the regatta!

Also, Mike Josselyn has put together the attached Event Brochure.  It has helpful information and resources for your visit and sailing.

Happy to answer any questions or provide further information.

Thanks,

About a month away with 10 boats registered.  If you are on the fence climb off the fence and register.  Any news on charters?

Tim,

Two other boats, one committed but has not signed up.  Boat 2 on the fence but likely.

Who is interested in a charter?  Let's talk.  Would love to see 3 more boats!  15!!   8)

With respect to local charters, we have eight "local area" boats, six of which have registered.  With respect to the other two, one is out of the area until October and the other one is not available for racing.

Given this, the most likely avenue to help increase participation would be to match up crew that can travel to the event with boats that can travel to participate but have an issue with crew.

There are "looking for crew" and "looking for boat" boards on the "Crew Board" on the Regatta site.  https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/24544#_newsroom

Even if it is just an initial thought, it is worth posting to see if something might develop.  Or just post here.

Just a reminder that everyone that is chartering or co-skippering a boat in the regatta will need to be current in their class association dues.

Good news is that the 11 boats/skippers registered to date are current!

If you have any questions on specific situations, please contact Emily Jones our class Secretary/Treasurer.

As part of its Gold Sponsorship of the U20 North Americans, Ullman Sails Newport Beach has contributed a U20 class jib at its cost which we will be auctioning off before the upcoming North Americans.  The Ullman class jib retails for $1,059 plus taxes and shipping.

Help support the Ultimate 20 North Americans and the Ultimate 20 Class Association by becoming a bidder and hopefully winning this jib!

The link to the auction site is:  https://airauctioneer.com/ultimate-20-north-americans-auction

The winning bidder can take delivery of the sail on Thursday at the North Americans or have it shipped to his or her home or business address.

Some notes on the jib and auction:

1.  The sail does not have a royalty tag, so one will need to be purchased from the class association.
2.  The sail will arrive with blue stripes.  If red stripes are desired, Ullman has said it will work with the winning bidder to get these changed out by a local sail maker at no additional charge.
3.  The winning bidder is responsible for actual shipping costs if not delivered at the North Americans (est $50 to $100 in the lower 48 for UPS depending on location).  Offsetting this is we will not charge sales tax on this transaction since we paid sales tax when the jib was purchased from Ullman.
4.  The auction will end at 6 pm PT on August 31.  Note that the auction will auto extend for 15 minutes if a bid is received in the last 15 minutes of the auction.
5.  The starting bid is $750.
6.  The winning bidder must contact John Wolfe, the Regatta Chair, by email at jpwolfe31@yahoo.com and make payment by Zelle, Venmo or Paypal within 24 hours after the end of the auction.  If payment is not timely made, the next highest bidder may purchase the sail.  If shipment is required, the estimated shipping cost will be provided following the end of the auction and must be paid at the same time.

Tim   Very excited that you are making the trip out and bringing the competitive sailing up a notch.  Thanks for attending!  Will you be staying in Pt. Richmond area?  Our sponsors are really the best places to catch breakfast, lunches, or dinners in Pt Richmond and Little Louie's gives you a 15% discount on their meals and lunches to go.  Of course, the Richmond Yacht Club will be serving on Friday, Saturday (as part of our regatta), and Sunday nights so you don't have to go far from the boat (or the free Anchor Brewing local beer!).

On the other hand, the Bay Area has the most diverse restaurant choices of anywhere in the world so name your style, your price range, and your location and we can be sure to hook you up with the best.

Regatta Notes from Steve Shaw!  Thanks Steve for the writeup and sharing your knowledge with the fleet!

A full moon weekend at one of the most iconic places in the world to sail; this was the recipe for
the 2022 Ultimate 20 North American Championships held at Richmond Yacht Club on San
Francisco Bay. The heat wave that was cast upon northern California made for a pleasant few
days leading up to the regatta. Conditions come race days made for perfect sailing with 15-25
knots of wind and sheltered just enough under Angel Island to make a fairly calm racecourse.
Our team of Ryan Janov, Tim Porter and Steve Shaw made a decision early on that we wouldn’t
let our lack of knowledge about the currents dictate our course strategies too much and that we
would pursue watching the wind on the water instead. The first beat of the first race is when this
played out and we learned to shift our focus after going around the windward mark 3rd behind
Mark Allen (26) and Scott Hester (226) who went left early. From that point on we recognized
that we wanted to start in the lower half of the line and get to the left side of the course where
there seemed to be more wind. Once around the weather mark, downwind became quite fun
with knowing there was more breeze on that side of the course and we could just set the kite
and let ‘er rip. With boat speeds consistently in the double digits, we perched ourselves in the
back corner of the boat and watched the spray go by.

Once back on land, the beautiful new Richmond Yacht Club facility and staff made for great
camaraderie and post race chalk talks.

Lessons learned along the way:
I learned early on that when you travel to a big regatta, it helps tremendously to be able to get
on the water early and acclimate to your surroundings. Our trip across country was uneventful
enough for us to arrive Tuesday morning for a Friday race day. An hour or two on the water
Wednesday allowed us to get used to sailing in and out of the harbor and asses our rig set up
with brand new sails. Thursday our third crew Ryan flew in from Southern California and we
immediately headed out on the water to tune with Travis Gregory (222) and his crew. We found
that our set up in two boat testing was good so went back in to try an older jib and see if we
could be as competitive. An observation I made in our two boat testing was for Travis to sheet
the jib a bit harder and change his main trim to a slightly eased mainsheet and more centered
traveler. This allowed him to stay fairly equal with us in height and speed when we came back
out to line up.
As the regatta approached I sat my team down and we decided who was going to do what so
there wasn’t anything to figure out on the water.
Ryan, the foremost crew was in charge of the big picture and figured out our best strategies to
get around the racecourse.
Tim, my trimmer was in charge of making sure the sails were in the right spots and would go up
and down cleanly.
Steve, with the tiller in hand had the duty of strictly watching and feeling the attitude of the boat
in the waves and staring at the tell tails. I’m guessing I looked outside of the boat less than a
dozen times during the regatta.
‘Trust’ was the motto for the weekend and it worked!

Yes, Susan has posted her photos now.  They look great!

As you may remember, Susan is a RYC member who volunteered to take photos for the event on Saturday.  These were the excellent shots that were displayed at the dinner Saturday night.

She has told me high resolution photos will be available on request at no charge.  You will just need to provide her with the thumbnail information.

Thanks Susan!
