I have searched “outboard” and read the threads, but still have some questions. I will be replacing a 3.3hp 2 stroke.
What is the max weight for the stock outboard bracket system?
For those sailing in high current areas what size outboard do you use? Is a 2.5hp 4 stroke with full crew sufficient for long distances?
Example we will be racing next weekend in a 35 mile around a local island. If the wind dies we might be traveling some distance. This is typical for the San Juan Islands.

Many of the SF Bay (high current) sailors have the Honda 2HP. it will push the boat along nicely at 5 knots. Works great for no wind situations and is very light and easy to move around. The Suzuki 2.3 (or 5) is also nice and less than 30 pounds. Greg Henning has a monster outboard he uses when he needs to get back for a party (ask him). But you really don't want a bunch of weight hanging on the transom when you are racing. So whatever you buy, consider you will be moving it into the cabin during the race.

Thank you for the quick reply.That is good information that those in SF use the Honda 2.3., I was looking at the Suzuki 2.5 for the weight vs a 3.5hp and hoping it would be sufficient. The 3.5s made by Tohatsu, are 41 ponds but the 4hp are 52-60 and that seems like a lot on the transom.

I just bought a 2.5 Suzuki. An upgrade from my 20 yr old 2hp 2 stroke Suzuki (Pepe). So far I am very happy with it since it had a lot of pep and surly more reliable than Pepe. My only criticism is a small fuel tank. So frequent refueling will be necessary along with a easy to use gas can.

I have used a 5HP Nissan 2 Stroke on the bracket. I do tie it forward to give extra support as it has a lot of torque. It can plane the boat at 9 knots.
