Title: Ultimate 20 2025 Pacific Coast Championship September 19-21
Post by: Mike Josselyn on April 20, 2025, 12:37:38 AM
Hold this date for the PCCs to be held at the Richmond Yacht Club on San Francisco Bay.   It will be a three day regatta as part of the One Design Invitational Regatta being held at the Club.  The number of fleets invited is limited to four and the U20s were selected given their strong presence at RYC and the support of other boat owners who have traveled to RYC for various events on the Bay.

So, you can expect a great race committee, a challenging event on the Bay during our "warm weather" season, and a welcoming venue at RYC.  Mark your calendars and more information will be coming on the event and logistics.

The "summer season" on San Francisco Bay is coming this September and October.  That usually means warmer sunny days and milder breezes compared to the fog driven June-August period.  There are three events for U20s that will be held this Fall that you should add to your calendar:

September 19-21:  Ultimate 20 Pacific Coast Championship in conjunction with the Fall One Design regatta.  The NOR and registration are currently open at https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/29814#_home.  For the U20s the event starts on Friday with a distance race and then windward/leeward mark races on Saturday and Sunday.  These races will occur on the Bay near the RYC in the area between Brooks Island and Southampton Shoals.  On shore events include dinner on Saturday night (included in registration) and regular meal service on Friday and Sunday evenings at the Club.  We will also have our regular post race briefings on the dock.

October 4:  Totally Dinghy.   Yes, the U20 is classified as a dinghy in this event along with the Wabbit.  This is one day of racing on the Bay with post race snacks and beer.   We expect to have a one design start for this event.

October 25-26: Great Pumpkin Regatta.   The end of the season blow out and party at RYC featuring windward leeward racing on Saturday and the round the islands race on Sunday.  There will be three racing venues with the U20s likely on the Southampton course.   This regatta draws in a lot of boats and there is a live dance band, great food, and no host bar on Saturday evening.  Bring your costumes!  Post race briefing on Saturday with beer on tap.  The Sunday race is your choice in direction around Angel and Alcatraz Islands.

Special storage.  Out of town U20 boats are being offered mast up storage for the three regattas in our new West Lot small boat yard for $180.  The lot has new electric carts to tow boats to the hoists.  Water and electric utilities are available.  Please contact Mike Josselyn if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity.  Of course, you are free to use your boat anytime during that period....not just the racing events.

The three days of racing for the Pacific Coast Championship was an awesome experience.  From racing around Alcatraz dealing with currents and strong winds and two days of sailing around the buoys, the racing was close, tactical, and exciting.  Upwind racing took patience to keep going through the waves, but the downwind surfing contests were fast with boats regularly showing 12-14 knots on the GPS speedos.  Rooster tails everywhere and lots of great stories at the debriefs each day.  We got in 8 races with one throwout.  Team 222 with Travis Gregory at the helm came in first, Michael Eisenberg on Toon Town 2nd, and John Andrew on Cinderella Story was third out of the seven boats on the line.  Their crews really did all the work on this regatta, with lots of action on spinnaker sets and douses, as well as helping keep the boats flat during the upwind legs.

The Totally Dinghy racing up next on October 4 at the Richmond Yacht Club.  It is one design for our class if we get 5 boats.  Don't let the name confuse you...U20s have been regularly racing in the winter dinghy series along with the 25 ft Wabbit and this is a continuation of that tradition.  Two boats are already signed up.  It will be one day of racing and in somewhat calmer waters than the Championship racing.

And the finale of the 2025 season on the Bay is the Great Pumpkin at the end of the month which can not be missed with floating pumpkins, buoy and distance racing, and a GREAT party as well.

As always, contact me with any questions!
