Noobie Questions - Vang, Boomkicker, Traveler
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:44:54 PM »
Hello All:

I've got a few questions about the setup of my boat.  I live a looong way from any other U20s and it's not easy to see other boats for comparison.  I bought my boat unrigged, with an unstepped mast and lots of line and blocks in a laundry basket. The class/manufacturer Setup Guide is very helpful, but some of the pictures are small and some of the descriptions are a bit sketchy.  My specific questions are:

How do I set up the vang?  I've got the "cable" style.  I've got the cable, a shackle, a double and a triple block, and line.  Or maybe I should get rid of the cable and set up a more traditional vang?

My boat came without a Boomkicker.  I've bought a Boomkicker, but in the spirit of measuring twice and cutting once can anyone who has a Boomkicker give me specific measurements as to where to install the mast and boom fittings.  Seoladair's directions are a bit vague and I really would prefer to only drill ONE set of holes in my boom...

Lastly, how do I rig the traveler?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Rob, keep the cable type vang set up, it works great.  The triple block attaches to the welded bail on the mast base plate.  The block running on the cable attaches to the pad eye on the boom.  The cable end attaches to the eye strap in the sail track just above the base of the mast.  I'd be glad to take photos of the set up if you have a few days.
The boom kicker at the mast end attaches resting against the top of the eye strap for the vang.  The boom end is installed on the bottom of the boom just in front of the pad eye for the vang.  I'll attempt to attach a photo of this location.
The traveler has one continuous line dead ending at the eye strap at each side of the cockpit near the end of the traveler.  Would photos of this help?
Been in the U20 game for 12+ years now and would be glad to answer any questions, so call if needed.
