2016 Northern California Mid-Winters and Season Championship

The 2016 Mid-Winters and Season Championship events and rules  have been reviewed and approved by the Northern California boat owners and are attached with this message.   Changes from 2015 include a separate mid-winters champion and season championship, additional races to encourage more participation throughout the region, and use of a low-average scoring system so boats are not penalized if they do not attend all events.   Also, the season is shortened somewhat so that the Matt Boroughf trophy can be awarded at the North Americans which will be held at the Richmond Yacht Club in October. 

We encourage boats from outside the region to join us in any of these events or to contact owners if they are traveling to the region and what to crew on their boats.   See you on the water.

Invitation to the Konocti Cup from Brad King.

As many of you know, the Konocti Bay Sailing Club continues to have one of the best early season regattas in Northern California. Our 26 Mile Konocti Cup is conducted every year on the fourth Saturday in April (this year April 23 / 24). The venue is very large (68 Sq Mi) natural lake conveniently located in the North Coast wine country that has both reliable wind and water. We have run the contest for over 30 years and have a solid but friendly race program with handicapping using the NorCal PHRF system.

The race itself has a Half Cup division for boats with ratings over 211 NorCalPHRF, but the main event is in the Full Cup. There are two divisions for keelboats that contend for the overall Konocti Cup honor, as well as divisional honors for boats up to 150 NorCal PHRF and one with those with higher ratings. We have also been seeing greater interest in our Multihull Division as the course is multihull friendly with long reaches and room for these faster craft to stretch out.

Big Daddy Regatta NORs and Registration is now open.  This regatta counts in both the Mid-Winters Championship and the Season Championship.

Madison is planning to race Konocti Cup this year...hope others are as well?  It is a fun race and the U20 has been the overall winner on several occasions.  Konocti conflicts with the Great Vallejo Race many years but it does not this year.  It would be a good tune-up for GVR as well.

If we got a critical mass of boats in the water mid-afternoon on Friday they would probably run some buoy races for us Friday evening if there is interest in that?

I'll inquire at the Big Daddy this weekend.   The Konocti Cup races are part of our season championship series if we can get four boats to attend.   There is one local boat, Mojo, but she is now at Richmond to race in the bay races.

Final results are in for the mid-winters championship for the Northern California fleet.   Seven boats participated with five boats sailing the minimum 4 races in the series.   The first part of the season was blue-bird weather, light winds and clear skies with the El Nino atmospheric river hitting during the last two races, pounding those who ventured out in high winds and rain. 

At the end, the top three boats were all within 0.25 points (using the low average scoring system) and the final results are Udecide (1st), Salsa (2nd), and Uhoo! (3rd).   Trophies were awarded at the Big Daddy.

The Season Championship starts with the Big Daddy and ends with the North Americans.

Final results were determined at the North Americans.  With 8 boats in the series and three boats qualifying with a minimum of 6 races, the Matt Boroughf Trophy for the Season Campionship went to Uhoo! (Mike Josselyn skipper and Greg Pfieffer and Steve Leonard as crew).  Second place was Salsa (David Krausz, Craig Watson, and Liz Ellison); and third was John Wolfe in Breakaway.  Another great season in the books.
