The Chamber of Commerce would have been happy with the conditions for the PCCs--sunny warm temperatures, winds 8-10, and plenty of boats on the water. The Sailing World 2022 Regatta series was a great experience for the U20 owners and crew that came from the Bay Area, Utah, Monterey, and San Diego. Though only five boats were on the line, the racing was very competitive with each team getting at least one bullet during the 10 race regatta. Wind shifts played a big part in the tactics but plain old upwind speed and downwind soaking was the secret to most of the racing. Mark Allan brought in his old crew from Utah and the Junta team collected the most bullets and the overall win for the Championship--but he also won the gratitude of the entire regatta fleet as Anchor Steam Beers were a sponsor and free beer was available at the conclusion of each day. Local boy, Bill Mendel and his crew on Fast Lane was consistently fast for second and Donna Womble on Peabody found the left side of the course favored to get third. The boats were not without their problems with spinnaker lines tweaked or stuck instead the mast, tiller extensions broken, and last minute crew changes but everyone survived to enjoy the hospitality and fun in San Diego. Next year, we hope that other U20 owners will attend at one of the best venues for sailing on the West Coast.
