Recommendations for PFDs
« on: August 28, 2012, 01:26:54 PM »
What do you guys think of the automatic/manual inflatable PFDs for use on the Ultimate 20?  I am thinking of purchasing 3 Onyx auto/manual inflatable PFDs to keep on the boat for racing.  These particular PFD's are pretty lightweight, relatively inobtrusive, and are a universal fit.

However, it doesn't look like most people racing on keelboats are using the inflatables, choosing instead to use a low profile vest (extrasport, zhik, etc.).

Does anybody have experience with these PFDs and an opinion on what the better option is?

We received two as a gift. Haven't used yet but I'll let you know first impressions in two weeks.

I have used my integrated harness manual/auto floatation vest very successfully until a Racine race were the rain set both of the ones I kept on the boat off and I have yet to replace the CO2 cartrige.  I have started wearing a standard PFD one because I am sailing with my youngest children and my back appreciates not cranking against the lifeline on the big wind days.
