Park City Sailing Association Fall Regatta September 21-22
« on: July 31, 2013, 06:22:54 PM »
Hey all,

The PCSA Fall regatta will be held at Jordanelle Reservoir the weekend after NA's.

If you are driving back and want to stop in, we will have a U20 start for this great regatta.  It's a great mountain venue only about 15 minutes from the ski town of Park City, Utah.

If you need to store a boat/towing rig on the way home and fly back to Utah we can help you out with storage.

Here is the Notice of Race / Registration

Travis/Mark,

I am curious how this regatta turned out?  No results were posted.  Reason being that this would seem to be a potential candidate regatta for the U20 Pacific Coast Championship regatta in 2014.  People have talked about doing it at my home port (Howard Prairie Lake Resort) but we are hosting the Santana 20 NAs this year so I just do not see the U20s being squeezed in at our lake next season.

What is the wind like that time of year?  What is the quality of the RC work?  Would the venue be cramped with 15+ U20s in addition to the other classes?  The race arena does not look especially large.  However, Salt Lake City is pretty centrally located.  I would think this venue could draw most all of the active west coast boats, plus the local fleet plus some Colorado boats.  The end of season timing is nice.  I would think hotels in Park City are comparatively cheap that time of year plus camping options etc.  Would PCSA be willing to host racing on Thursday evening/Friday/Saturday for a U20 event?  This would only jam us up with the other boats on Saturday and we would have the lake to ourselves Thurs/Friday.  Is there room to moor in the water?

This type of schedule can reduce lost work days.  For example, from Medford, I would just leave work a little early Tuesday and drive to Lakeview.  Get up and finish the drive Wednesday and rig Wed evening.  Sail a little Thursday morning to get the kinks worked out.  Take a break and eat a little lunch for first shape at say 3:30PM.  Two races and knock off about 6:30.  Race all day Friday (say 4-5 races).  Then take what we get with the other boats Saturday.  De-rig and then party Saturday Night and awards.  Hook the boat up and drive home Sunday.  That schedule is only three days of missed work with a slate of racing.

Mark/Travis thoughts?

Jay,

Sorry we didn't do a better job of posting results etc.  We had 6 boats.  The wind both years we have done it has been great.  This year it blew 20's with gusts to 35 on day 1 as a front was passing.  Day 2 was more moderate mid to high teens.

The PCSA does an awesome job on race committee.

We would definitely be willing to make this a more formal event if other U20's are interested in traveling to Park City.  I know the Utah fleet is planning on it again for 2014.

We have 9 boats locally.  Some may be willing to charter or host more experienced crew members.

Sounds like a potentially cool option.  Timing would not compete with NAs- which is important in my opinion.  Got any Pics/Vids that can be posted?  Mark Allen - what is your take on this concept - it is your fleet?

What about the other usual suspects - Layla? Salsa? U-Decide? Toon Town?  Looney Toons?  Too Tuff? Uhoo?  Juiced?  Redbeard?

We could approach the PCSA about hosting a U20 only West Coast Champs event.  If we are going to get 15 boats, that would be the best option.  It definitely gets interesting sailing through the laser fleet in a blow!

There are guest slips for about 10 boats and possibility of mooring out for a few that time of year. It depends on the water level.  We can also pull a few boats over night.  The ramp / facilities are good but lack protection.  Not a big deal as long as you have a few hands to help when the wind is blowing.

If we have a separate event we could move the date around a bit.  I would definitely recommend mid to late September.  The crowds at the lake are gone and the wind, temperature is excellent!

Here is a quick video shot from one of the U20's who was spectating on day 2.  Gives you a sense of the size of the lake where the races are held.

I like the idea. We also should have a good turnout for the SD NOODs. I am up for whatever will pull the most boats.

The Park City Regatta could easily turn into 3 days. The race committee will accommodate whatever we want to do. I would hope some of the CO boats would come but it might conflict with the CO governors cup.
It is an easy drive from southern Cal. The 2 ID boats are close and Udecide is not too far away.

I would like to get this sorted out soon so poeple can plan and we get better turnouts.

What if we did it the Thurs evening-Sat. weekend prior to the fall regatta?  Then the local U20 guys could volunteer to work the local fall regatta in exchange for support of our PCC regatta the prior weekend.  The Sept 11-13 weekend should eliminate the conflict with the Governer's Cup for the CO boats.

You mentioned water level risks.  What is the possibility that water levels would be so low that the event would need to be cancelled?  I suspect we would have a good idea of snow pack in April so if an alternate venue is needed we could dial that in with adequate time for the class to choose an alternate location.

At the Annual Meeting down in Marina Del Rey someone mentioned the High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake for the PCCs, and there was a good level of support for that venue.

The lake is VERY deep at that end.  It could happen, but it's unlikely we would have to cancel due to water level.  If we did, Strawberry 30 minutes further is likely a good alternative and the same group could likely host.

The PCSA 2014 schedule isn't available yet that I know of.  As soon as it is, we'll offer up a proposal.  We'll try to choose a date in September that works around Nationals and the Governors Cup  so we can get the biggest draw.

Thanks
