With North American's in Richmond, thoughts on PCC's for 2016?

How about San Diego in March?  Would that tempt some of you guys to drive down from Northern CA?

I would like to suggest the Columbia Gorge for the site for the 2016 PCC's in conjunction with the One Design Regatta on July 29 - July 31 2016. The Columbia Gorge Racing Association describes the world-class sailing conditions as follows:

Gorge Winds

"The famous winds of the Gorge are driven by the temperature gradient between the desert to the east and the Pacific coast to the west.  The Gorge acts as a "wind tunnel" in the Cascade Mountains. Colder air at one end of the tunnel flows toward warmer air at the other end.  In the summer and fall, cold air from the coast rushes to replace rising hot air in the desert.  In the winter and spring, cold air flows from the east to the more temperate coast.  The larger the temperature difference the stronger the wind".

I checked with the NorCal fleet, and with two regatta weekends for our mid-winter championship prior to the NOODS, it looks like most will be staying home; though the San Diego venue is awesome and you already have a one design start.    Another suggestion is the High Sierra Keelboat in July at Lake Huntington...our own Bob Comstock is organizing the event and could help with working on the PCCs, I would think.

Race is scheduled and lake level looks promising.  We have 5 boats committed so far.

Team Madison did its calendar planning this week and we are planning on doing High Sierra.  I think this would be a good PCC event to welcome back the water to the Sierra Nevada.  Madison should make 6 boats committed.  Can we get a head count of the other boats?  For those who have never sailed Huntington Lake it is worth the effort because it is such an amazing venue.   My only knock on the regatta used to be the limited number of starts (only 3).  One bad race and you were out of it - even if you sailed really well in the other two.  There are now five races so I think that is an improvement and more appropriate for a championship event.

Jay.  I think we will get more boats at The High Sierra and encourage teams to look into making reservations at campgrounds as they are filling up.  With Madison, we are actually at seven boats committed at this time.

Rancheria is where a number of us are staying.   We may need to combine on some sites.  Bob Comstock, skipper of Ultimate Antics, is hosting the fleet at his lakeside condo on Friday.  Dan Irwin, skipper of Waasabi, is the commodore of the Fresno Yacht Club, and very amenable to seeing the U 20s have a successful and fun event.  If there is a "formal" process to get the venue approved as the PCC, I'm sure he'd be glad to follow up with the powers-that-be.

West Coast U20ers- the west coast contingent of the U20 Board weighed in to make if official - High Sierra will be the 2016 PCCs.

Hope to get a good turn out of boats - would like to see all the Bay Area boats make it plus a few more... Make your camping/lodging reservations now!   Dan - can you please let the class know when registration is open?

So far, 5 boats signed up.  Bob Comstock met with the Edison folks and it looks like the lake will be full and ready for the PCC's.   Looking for at least 10 to 15 boats, so sign up when you can.   Use this forum to try to arrange for campsites etc if you need help.

From Sailing Anarchy

After 2 years without water, the regatta is coming back with some significant changes. In keeping with modern trends in small boat racing there will be more races.  We are changing the format to include 5 races.  This will place an emphasis on starting and boat handling at the marks.  All the fun stuff.  In order to accomplish this short course racing…the traditional start finish line will be separated.  We have been locked in to the longer race format because we only had one start finish line.  With 8 starts, short races would finish before we got all the starts off.

There will be drone and on the water video coverage which will be put together and shown at the Saturday evening party. Of course the good spinnaker snafu’s will have to go on YouTube.

The party location is being moved to the ski resort at China Peak.  Transportation will be provided between the party and the launch ramp area.  This way everyone will be free to enjoy the dinner and party at whatever level they choose.

Finally got around to getting registered.  Eight boats as of Independence Day.  Would like to see a few more get registered-

Good racing with/against everyone.  Congratulations to Bob Comstock who sailed very well.  I appreciate being able to sail with such a strong fleet.
