2022 Northern California Matt Boroughf Season Championship Rules and Blog

The Season Championship is to recognize those skippers and crew that consistently participate and do well in races held in Northern California or other races recognized for promoting and supporting the Ultimate 20 class in the region.   The Matt Boroughf Trophy for the Season Championship will reward those skippers who score the best in races where two or more qualified U20s race using a High Score Averaged Scoring System.   This system places more emphasis on those races with a higher number of participants; however, any race with two or more qualified boats will be scored.

To qualify for the season championship trophy, an owner must sail in at least eight events either from the list above or as added during the season.  If an event is canceled after boats are registered, the number of events required for qualification will be reduced.  For boats that sail in the PCC or the Nationals, it will be counted as two events towards the eight events to qualify for the trophy.

Richmond Midwinters were held on four days on the first Sunday of the month from December to March.  Eight boats raced during the event and eventually 15 individual races were completed in sunny weather and winds between 5-8 knots.  Mark Allen, recently moved from Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club handedly won the series, sailing on Junta with Trent Watkins (former owner of UFO) and Trent's son, Cooper.  Phil Kanegsberg was second on Udecide and Mike Josselyn third on Uhoo!  New boat owner, Jeff Cook, sailing Ubetcha also came out along with David Woodside on Uagain, John Wolfe on Breakaway, Mike Cintron on Madison, and Scott Hester on Umunhum.  Some other prospective owners have been seeing our fleet grow and may be looking for boats.

Looking forward to the Big Daddy regatta on March 11-12 with mark races on Saturday and  long distance race around the islands where U20s can generally do well against the larger boats if we pick the right direction!

The Big Daddy Regatta was held at the Richmond Yacht Club on March 12-13.  Known also as the Spring Tune Up race, it seemed like a classic summer day on the Bay.  The first day was buoy racing and the Olympic Circle (better known as the Slot) was the destination for the Ultimate 20 fleet along with the Express 27, Moore 24, and J70s.  The day started cool with winds in around 8 to 10 knots, but by the time the racing started had moved up to 15 with gusts to 20.  Strong ebb tide during the regatta, but it seemed the going right was a good move on the upwinds.  Downwind was a drag race with boats quickly reaching planning speeds.  The second race started well, but winds were soon hitting a consistent 20 knots at the windward mark and some pretty spectacular knockdowns and spinnaker twists on the downwinds.  The race committee called for some pretty long races and it was decided that two was enough for the day--with Scott Hester winning, Dave Woodside second, and Phil Kanegsberg third.  Free beer, snacks and a great evening dinner and party allowed most of the crews to unwind but none stayed for the end of the dance party as we all headed to the bunk early.

Saturday the time clock moved ahead an hour while most of us slept in to prepare for the long distance race--any direction around Angel Island and Alcatraz and back to the club.  The wind came up early and stayed full on for the race.  With the strong ebb tide, 90% of the fleets headed close hauled through Raccoon Straits on the first leg and once around Angel Island, headed to Alcatraz on a reach that allowed U20s to leg out.  Once around Alcatraz and its swirling currents, it was another drag race back to the Club.  This is where U20s excelled going consistently between 10-12 knots over the leg with all the crew weight in the aft end of the boat.  In the end, Mike Josselyn was the first in the U20 fleet and came in 11th overall in a fleet of 90 boats.  John Wolfe was second in the U20 fleet.  The most successful boat in the race was the Wylie Wabbit--getting 6 of the top 10 positions.

With the winter season over and the Pacific Coast Championship in the books, the leader (no surprise) at this time is Mark Allen (Junta).  Phil Kanesgberg (Udecide) is a close second and Mike Josselyn (Uhoo!) in third. 

Still lots of racing to go this summer and the Nationals at Richmond this fall and, the grand finale at the Great Pumpkin.  Lots of opportunities to race with the Behrens Regatta coming up next on the 16th of April.

West Coast U20s have lots of opportunities for sailing in the summer with Bay and Lake regattas opening up.  Torston Kanegsberg (Udecide) won the Go for the Gold Regatta on Gold Lake, Mike Josselyn (Uhoo!) was second (and first U20) in the Tiburon Yacht Club's Behrens Regatta on the Bay, and Donna Womble (Peabody) finished 26th overall (out of 83 boats) in the very challenging 67 mile Delta Ditch Run. Next up is the Lake Huntington High Sierra and the HO Lind Series on San Francisco Bay with the Grand Finale being the Nationals at the Richmond Yacht Club.  If you have West Coast events you are sailing in, please post on the forum.

Busy weekend for U20 sailors.  Up on Huntington Lake at 7000 ft, the sun shined and the westerly breeze over the dam came in as usual for five U20s at the High Sierra Regatta put on by the Fresno Yacht Club.  Three local boats participated but the visitor, Donna Womble, sailing Peabody put on a clinic by finishing first with local boy, Bob Comstock on Ultimate Antics coming in second.

On the Bay, three U20s battled it out in King tide currents at the HO Lind Regatta at the Tiburon Yacht Club.  Lots of changing positions throughout as boats struggled to find the best lay line in flood currents as they crossed the Bay.  Mike Josselyn on Uhoo! got the bullets for the day ahead of Dave Woodside on Uagain.

The Tiburon Yacht Club welcomed the Ultimate 20 fleet to its HO Lind Summer Series held in June, July, and August. With flat water yet decent winds coming over the gap on the Tiburon peninsula, the venue is a perfect place for the U20. This year’s dates coincided with full moon driven spring tide currents. With courses that use navigation marks that cross the channel, the currents complicated the tactician’s job. It was a mixed PHRF fleet this year but the long downwind courses called by the race committee gave the advantage to the sporties. Mike Josselyn, with crew members Steve Cameron and Jim Immer were able to pull off a 1st place finish for the series.

The winner of 2022 Matt Boroughf Season Championship for the Northern California fleet is Mark Allen sailing Junta with Trent and Cooper Watkins.  The winners were announced after the finale of the 13 race season.  Mark won with 41 points out of the 60 points possible using the High Point Score system.  Team Junta won the PCCs in San Diego, was second in the U20 Nationals at RYC, and third in the Great Pumpkin buoy racing.  Overall, a great and consistent  sailing for a "newbie" to the Northern California fleet.  Trent and his son, Cooper, provided the local knowledge and skill to get the boat around the varied courses.

Phil Kanegsberg and Denise Hammond on Udecide put up a great battle by winning the Great Pumpkin buoy racing but came in second with 35 points.  Mike Josselyn on Uhoo! was third with 31 points.  Eleven boats made the minimum eligibility to be scored for the Season Championship.
