Hello U20 sailors.

Lake Norman Fleet #2 is excited about hosting the U20 North Americans in November.  As part of this event, we want to recognize Don Corey for his years of dedication to the U20 Class.

Many of you know Don Corey as a devoted godfather to the enduring popularity of the Ultimate 20 Class, and Fleet 2, having brought his initial U20 (#88, Antics) to Lake Norman in December 1997. Beginning with his first North American Championship in 1999, he participated in 17 North American Championships through 2018 (and won in 2002).  Don has since retired from active sailing due to health reasons, but is still available for advice and encouragement to our Lake Norman fleet--and anyone else who gives him a call.

We here in North Carolina, are hoping to take advantage of the upcoming North American Championship to honor him for his devotion, guidance and service to our fleet and the U20 Class over the years.

Here’s the idea: contribute any amount you wish towards the “Don Corey Godfather Sponsorship.”  We will make sure Don gets big billing at the North Americans; a premier seat on one of the spectator boats and as much sailing as he wants. We will also celebrate Don with a huge round of applause at the dinner on Saturday evening. The sponsorship funds that we raise will be used to support this year’s championship.

Send your checks payable to "U20 Fleet 2" to BJ Jones, Fleet Treasurer, at 115 Pelican Court, Mooresville NC 28117.  You can also Venmo to @Emily-Jones-954. Be sure to put “Godfather“ in the memo line.

Thanks for your consideration of this opportunity to recognize Don Corey.

Kind regards,

Emily Jones
U20 Class Treasurer/Secretary

Another fantastic North American Championship is in the books.  Thank you to our gracious hosts at Lake Norman Yacht Club.  Including incredible organizers/volunteers from our class (Emily & BJ Jones, Alison and & Derek Binkley, Dean Nelson and Treez Decker).

Congratulations Steve Shaw, Tim Porter and Dave Rink who sailed an amazing 15 point First place.  Second: Mark Aspland, Brad Russell and Lauren Russell. Third: Mark Allen, Robert Pincus and Peter Sharp.   Also awarded was the Don Corey award for the most improved to Jacob Terrell.   Don was instrumental to the development of the Lake Norman Fleet and has helped many U20 sailors over the years.

Regatta Report - Filed by Steve Shaw!

Lake Norman, North Carolina once again proved to be a great venue in the fall for the 2023 Ultimate 20 North American Championships held at LNYC.  26 boats registered meant that this would be the largest attended Championship in the history of the Class.  With forecasted rain (which the area needed very much) and big breeze on tap, it didn’t disappoint.  Four races were held on the first of a three day regatta in solid 15-20+ knot breeze with the afore mentioned rain.  Steve Shaw with crew Tim Porter and Dave Rink aboard Mighty Mouse (#21) ran away with the day and a scorecard of 1,1,2,2.  The following day of racing was met with much lighter breeze but still good sailing conditions.  Mark Aspland (#88) with Thistle National Champion Brad Russell as crew were able to boatspeed their way to the daily award while posting a 1,4,1.  Sunday brought sunshine in the morning with blue skies and perfect 8-12 knot winds.  The Mighty Mouse was in top form posting the final 1,4,1 to lock up the championship with wins in 5 of the 10 races held.  This marked the second year in a row and third time total that Steve and Tim have paired to take the title.  Be sure to make plans to be at next years event and try to take the top spot away!
