Carbon Mast Stiffness
« on: September 15, 2017, 02:35:58 PM »

Hi guys, I just picked up #63 from northern Idaho and I'm looking forward to racing with you guys.  The boat is pretty will sorted with a new carbon rig and a decent inventory of sails.  I had to do a bit of deck core repair but the boat seems very solid.   I've seen a variety of tuning guides for the boat but I'm wondering how the new carbon masts (this one is a Fortecarbon stick) compares to the aluminum masts.  I'm presuming that the carbon mast will be stiffer and may require more rig tension, but that's just a guess.  Does anyone have a sense about how these masts compare to aluminum and how that will effect the tuning?

Hi Bob,

PM me your e-mail address.  I'll connect  you with the previous owner of Red Beard and the owner of Peabody.  They both sail the forte rig.  In discussion there seems to be a consensus that it's much stiffer than the aluminum rig, but can be bent more than the c-tech rig.  I am by no means an expert on this topic, 222 is aluminum.  i took a quick look on the U20 Yahoo group site, there is some more info about the carbon rigs in the back-log but I didn't see anything conclusive.  You may want to do a more exhaustive search yourself.

Where are you sailing?

Hey Bill

Congrats on joining the class! I have sailed a regatta with one of the forte mast and we have made a few sails for them. Initially we thought that the our standard "tin" rig mainsail would be good but it was just to full. The Forte mast does not bend as much fore and aft as the tin rig and for sure not anywhere near where the C-Tech rig does.
Cheers

Hey Tac - I've got a Forte mast and Doyle main from 2013.  Saw your post about the earlier cut being the same as the aluminum rig but finding it was too full.  Would a recut to take some of the fullness out be advisable?
Thanks...
