2024 Northern California Season Championship (Matt Boroughf Trophy) is off to a good start with five races so far--all of which were sailed on San Francisco Bay.  The Richmond Yacht Club hosted the U20 Fleet with one design mark racing during the Midwinters Series and the Big Daddy Regatta and the Single Handed Sailing Society held their annual Three Bridge Fiasco.  At all these events, the local fleet was joined by traveling boats from Monterey, Reno, Salt Lake City, and Bend Oregon.  With the season only a quarter of the way through, eight boats have met the 3 event criteria for being scored in the series and we expect more as the season progresses.  At present, Phil Kanegsberg and Denise Hammond on Udecide lead in the scoring using a High Point Averaged Scoring System but close behind are Marty Smihula, Michael Eisenberg, and Donna Womble.

Next up for the Fleet is the Don Wan Regatta at the Tiburon Yacht Club on April 6 and the Dolphin Cup at the Monterey Yacht Club April 13-14.  Of course, the big event will be the U20 Nationals on Huntington Lake to be held after the High Sierra Regatta on July 22-24.  We expect a lot of boats and more competitors in the Season Championship as the season progresses.

RYC Midwinters was a ton of fun.  And if you haven't done a three bridge, it must go on your bucket list.  I'll be back for another.   8)

As the season progresses, the standings have been very fluid between the top competitors for the Season Championship.  Donna Womble and Team Peabody did an excellent job during the Dolphin Cup (and there were actually dolphins swimming around the boats!) with bullets across the five races on a windy Monterey Bay.  The Utah boys on Marty Simhula's Hard Drive continued showing how to sail fast with a second place finish and Ken Nelson on Twenty 20 from Fresno Yacht Club was third.  Udecide from Reno and Toon Town from Oregon completed the interstate competitors list.  On the weekend before, at the Tiburon Yacht Club's Don Wan regatta, John Wolfe with Team Breakaway demonstrated some great tactics sailing with the spinnaker to and back from the leeward mark for 1st place in the U20 Fleet and 2nd overall in the regatta.

Team Peabody currently holds a slim lead over Team Hard Drive and Team Udecide in the Season Championship points.  Lots will be decided at the NAs in Huntington Lake.  But first up on the list is the Behrens Regatta on May 18th in San Francisco Bay.

The calendar has two more events scheduled for the Season Championship:  the Pacific Coast Championships to be held in the end of September in Park City and the Great Pumpkin to be held in the end of October at the Richmond Yacht Club.  The High Sierra and the Nationals at Huntington Lake were well attended and the competition was stiff at all levels.  Of the teams currently qualified for the Season Championship (7 event points or more), Team Peabody is in the lead at 78.3% (High Point Score) with Team Udecide at 66.7%, Team Hard Drive at third at 65.5%, and Team Uhoo! trailing at 46.2%  However, the remaining events offer other boats at chance for trophy eligibility with the PCCs counting as two event points and GP as 1 point.  If you have any questions on where your team stands, contact me and I can fill you in.  Good luck!

The winner this year for the Northern California Season Championship trophy is Donna Womble, owner of Peabody flying the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club burgee.  Donna put in quite a season attending Richmond Yacht Club's midwinter series, the Three Bridge Fiasco, the Dolphin Cup, the High Sierra, the Great Pumpkin, and the North Americans held at Huntington Lake.  She was a consistent top finisher and was first place in the Dolphin Cup.  Eleven boats met the eligibility for scoring in the series.  Using the High Point Percentage Scoring System, Donna had 69.6 %, followed by Phil Kanegsberg/Denise Hammond from the Richmond Yacht Club on Udecide (65.5), and then Marty Smihula on Hard Drive from the Park City Sailing Center (65.0).  Congratulations Team Peabody!
