2011 U20 North Americans

That's right, it is time to start thinking about the 2011 U20 North Americans.  We are about a month away from this years North Americans and the Annual Class meeting.  Please take the time to think if your area would like to host the 2011 North Americans.

At another time I would suggest Mobile Bay (BucYC of FYC), Perdido Bay (Point YC), Pensacola Bay (PensacolaYC), or Chocthachee Bay (Ft Walton YC). Things are a little sticky right now. One thing is for sure we have enough oil to greese a few palms.

Whoever would like to host, the Colorado group will be able to provide you with a significant amount of the work that has gone into this year's event. The budget, NOR's, entry forms, and several other items, and we will be available to answer any questions you might have. This should make it fairly easy to get started with planning the event.

Was there any discussion about this at the Nationals? If not the Gulf Coast might be a good choice now that the oil situation seems under control. There are several clubs which do outstanding jobs of hosting this type of event. Pensacola did a great job a number of years ago. I belong to Fairhope YC and Buccaneer YC on Mobile Bay and each do a good job hosting this type of event. Ft Walton Beach YC would also be a good NW Fl club to host. If held in the fall several clubs have the space to store your boat until the winter race season in Florida. Currently we are anticipating a bid for the 2011 North Americans from Holland, MI.  The Gulf Coast would be a great location for 2012, Billy please look into this as a possiblility.

If it is not too early to start looking toward 2012 I'd like to bring a few ideas forward. First I would like to suggest that we move toward having the Nationals on the Northern Gulf Coast. If the class finds that idea appealing I will move forward in contacting Pensacola YC to host as our first choice. There are good clubs to the east and west who would also be good choices. Pensacola is a fine club who has a wonderful reputation for holding first class events. Located on what we call the "Emerald Coast" Pensacola sports some of the finest sailing at one of the best beach playgrounds in the world. The reputation has been earned by the sugar white sand and emerald color of the water. The Beaches, whether Perdido Key to the west, Pensacola Beach or Destin to the East are consistently ranked in the top five beach destinations nationally by travel magazines. Pensacola YC also has a capability of storing boats on either end of the Florida winter circuit which is a positive to those northern boats that like to come south for the winter. My best case senario would be a late April Nationals after a good season of warm weather sailing in central and south Florida. My second choice would be a fall Nationals where the northern boats could migrate south afterward. Any thoughts?

This sounds great.  I would focus on what is the best sailing conditions to choose a time frame for the North Americans.

Fall is good (12knts) Spring is damn good (15+knts). My question would be how would class members react to having a spring Nationals around the first week in May? I'm pretty sure that the boats that came south for the winter season could leave their boats at PYC for a month or so before the nationals. They have lots of yard area.

The spring is fine. I would go for conditions over time of year. Plus with over a year to plan one could fit this into their schedule.

I am proud to announce that the 2011 North Americans will be held at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Holland, Michigan on August 12-14th, 2011.

Start making plans to be there from near and far!

I was over in Holland sailing last night and had a hand full of people come up and tell me how great they thought it was that the U 20 fleet is coming to there club. So there is some excitement over there for this!

They are going to put the dock back in like they had for the Melges 20 NA's a couple weeks ago so that we can tie up Med Style. This will be a cool event.

Thanks Tac for the note.  Macatawa Bay YC is located on Lake Michigan's "Sunset Coast". The Club has hosted numerous National, regional and local regattas. There is excellent expressway access from east, west north and south. MBYC is relaxed and friendly as well as experienced and well-fitted to this type of championship.  The club staff and members are very pleased to be chosen to host the 2011 U-20 NAC.  In addition to MBYC's casual dining room there are numerous great places to dine within a 15 minute drive including 2 within a mile of the club. The regatta is scheduled for August 11-14, 2011. The weather and conditions should be great. The community, pool and beaches are a great place to bring the entire family.
