Lake Murray Midlands Regatta
« on: August 27, 2010, 05:42:24 PM »
Who is planning on attending this regatta. I believe the date is Nov 6th and 7th. If we want to sell more boats we have to develop a presence at more venues. This could be a good one especially with Lake Norman just up the road.

There was talk of this regatta being the U20 East Coast Championship but have seen nothing posted.  If so, the word needs to get out which will help participation.
Anyway, it's on our schedule to do.

Slippery is planning to do this one. Steve has really supported class. It would be a shame if we do not reciprocate.

OK, here's the deal.....

The Outback Regatta is Oct. 2-3. (Regatta Party Friday, the 1st.) A great regatta but, since the Outback restaurant (who sponsors the regatta) has to schedule around South Carolina college football home football games, the reggatta is early this year. The Outback will have 75-85 boats spread over racer's, cruisers and catamarans. The is an fun regatta, but early October in Columbia has a fair risk of light winds and floaters.

The Outback NOR is here: http://columbiasailingclub.org/pages/Outback/Microsoft%20Word%20-%202009%20Preliminary%20Outback%20Notice%20of%20Race%20Aug%2010.pdf
By the way, if you look at the sponsors listed in the NOR, one is It's All Good! #287. That's my Catalina 270.

The Midlands is Nov 6 & 7 (and another party on Friday, the 5th) Saturday's dinner is the club's annual Oyster Roast. The Midlands is a bit smaller than the Outback, but with similar racing fleets. Good racing and a good times ashore. We have free camping on the grounds and the usual hotels nearby.

Both regatta's will have experienced race committees and we should have our own start with 5 or boats.

A little Midlands info here and eventually there will be an NOR:  http://columbiasailingclub.org/pages/Midlands/index.htm

For anyone who is interested in on or both regatta's, Alex Bolan (my crew from from the NA's) will be able to move boats around as needed. We can get them down to St. Pete for the January OD regatta and back in the spring.

And, of course, both regatta's will be serving bottomless cups of Goombay's from the now-infamous 'blender'.

Our club website: http://columbiasailingclub.org

Let me know if you have any questions.

Don, how many boats do you think might be willing to travel to Columbia? This seems like a great opportunity to showcase the boat and I think making it the East Coast Championship regatta is a great idea. Let's make a goal of getting 12 boats to attend. Thoughts?

We probably won't have but one or two travel down to the Outback as that date conflicts with our first Leukemia Cup here on Lake Norman.  Hopefully we could get several (4-5-6) down for the Midlands particularly if it's the ECC but our Carolina Keelboat One Design regatta (CKOD) is the following weekend.

Promised Addison we would do the Lake Norman series this winter but she understands if Midland is our November date then Lake Norman for the March return flight.   My primary concern is where can "SG" and the 1990 Dodge Dakota live from November to March?  I figure Southern state storage versus heated storage in Minnesota covers my gas.  (Please no reality checks on this as this rational has gained traction!!!)

Don, Last year I contacted a few folks who have not made a show recently and think I can get 2 new faces or return faces to SC. Adding myself and recruiting Charlie Cushing from St Pete that would make 4 as my minimum goal. Last spring Chuck Bellew came from SC to Lake Norman. I would think he would be a candidate. Let's identify the folks who can be recruited to come and start turning the screws. Also with all the yard space at LNYC would it be possible to store a car and boat through the winter between regattas? Is SC it? If so lets roll!

Come sail in Columbia for the Midlands and your boat will be at Lake Norman waiting for you the next weekend for CKOD. Alex Bolan and I will move boats from SC to NC as needed.

Nate, Alex and I will get your boat and tow vehicle to St. Pete for you. Yo can fly into St. Pete and have your boat and vehicle waiting for you.

I'm not going to make it from the West coast to the Midlands this year. I will be flying back for whatever regatta in FL you guys choose.

I have had something come up which will keep me from attending. I will miss being there and learning from the pros. Please drink some Goombays for me.

I know that Brad won this Regatta with our boat (I was home with bad back) but is there not going to be any results posted? Good place to race? Was there any discussion about winter race venue? Pensacola? St. Petes Nood? anything? The West Coast guys showed a lot of enthusiasm with NA's as well as their local events with lots of postings showing up on our website. Are we dragging a little in the East? The value in our boat is there because it is a one-design. Participation and an active website are perhaps our cheapest and best forms of advertising.
