Happy New Year to the U20 junkies!

I was wanting to get a conversation started about a west coast championships in 2011.  It would be nice to have one major regatta in the second half of the season that everyone has circled on their calendars.

We could talk to the Fresno Yacht Club about adding a U20 race day on Friday and folding us in with the rest of the High Sierra on Sat and Sun. I have even thought about hosting it here under a similar arrangement at our club's regatta (at Howard Prairie Lake) as we are the only venue that is a single day's drive from any location on I-5 (a long day from San Diego, but doable).

What other thoughts do the west coasters have?

We have been in the class for three years now and this is actually the first I have heard this regatta referred to as the Pacific Coast Championship.  I think the class would benefit from communicating this on an annual basis. 

However, I guess I would also like to revisit the issue of one regatta at the same time of year, at the start of the season, and in the corner of the country being the perpetual pacific coast championship.

Denver is actually four hours closer to San Diego than Seattle is (Denver is a 1.5 day drive versus a full two days from Seattle).  Lake Dillon is actually closer to Seattle than San Diego is.

Maybe the SD NOOD should be the designated PCC in even years and the default venue on odd years if no other time and location is promoted and selected by the class in the even years???

Can't do the SD NOOD this year due to a personal conflict, but we definately want to get down there with Madison in the next year or two.

  I like the idea of the PCC moving around on the west coast. We have a traveling tour set up for Colorado I would like to see a set of regattas that make up a west coast circut. Do you have any ideas? I would think of the following;

San Diego NOOD
Konocti
Seattle NOOD
Delta Ditch/go for the gold
High sierra
Long beach race week
Richmond riviera
Jazz cup
Great Pumkin

The idea would be to pull attendence to these regattas and make larger fleets to market the boat.

Would there be an adequate number of boats attending the 2011 S.D. Nood to qualify it as the "West Coast Championships"?  I have heard that the list of boats that were mentioned previously has dwindled to one and currently that one boat is the only one entered.  There were only eight boats participating in 2010 (nine entered) and many of those are rumored to not be returning for 2011.  Will there be any others attending the 2011 S.D. Noods?  Time is growning short and it is time to make arrangements, should I bother?

2007 was the first year for the trophy and it consited of 6 boats signed up and 5 boats sailing. If they reach those numbers I can't see why it doesn't count. As it has been discussed we could move it around the west coast for greater participation in upcoming years. I deleted my previous post about commited Colorado boats. 3 of the boats will not be making the trip because of timing, economic and logistical reasons. I am very disapointed I cannot make it to San Diego this year as it is my favorite place to sail the U20. I cannot swing 2 major trips and would like to make the NA's.

Any thoughts of a series scoring system for a select list of regattas.  the boat scoring the most points at the whole list getting the PCC trophy?  This would not only include all major regions that have decent fleets (So Cal, SF Bay, Pac Northwest, Denver), but also reward the boats that travel to other regional races.  The difficulty here would be comparing the NOODs with a Great Pumpkin type racing format.  One being hard core one design with races in the double digits, the other more of a mix of One design and fun reverse handicap racing.

Here in Colorado we do a high point scoring system for the series with 3 throwouts for a 10 race series. You get more points with a higher number of entries so it rewards you for participation. With races like the great pumkin you would score it on u20 entires alone. The dificulty of running a series like this is what races do you include? I think the region is too large to do a traveling race series for the PCC. I like the idea of the PCC moving around to different events each year to help drive participation and promote the boat. I could see it rotate through the SD NOOD, high sierra, Seattle NOOD, and Dillon Open, for starters.

Your last post is a little closer to my earlier one and I like where that is going.  Maybe we could rotate it around in three different general geographies Intermountain (ie Colorado/Utah), Pacific Northwest (Washington/Oregon), and Northern California.  I like the idea of keeping the SD NOOD as the PCC in years when NAs are in the west because no one else in the west is going to schedule a North American Championship Regatta anywhere near March in the west, so the SD NOOD still seems to be a logical choice in those years.  The Southern Cal boats would then still get the SD NOOD as the PCC championship every three or four years.

I kind of like the idea of polling.  When the general geography is up for its respective turn, then members can propose the date and venue for that season by say February 15th and then we have until March 15 to vote on the preferred venue.  The venue that garners the most votes wins.

What does everybody think about that?

I like the idea of having it where we get the best attendance.  If you want NW boats to come south in the spring, we need to know well in advance - it takes time to get a boat moved from (almost) border to border, working around the winter storms and not trashing your boat in the process with all the gravel we use for de-icing/traction up here.  We made it to SD one year and had a blast - I would do that again - or SF in the fall.  Maybe we could do like they do on the east coast and move the boats south for the winter and fly in.

I like the rotation idea; CO, CA, PNW.  One location each year for the West Coast Championships.

We should also work within the North American's schedule so that we do not conflict.

Zipper's schedule this summer:

Seattle NOOD's
Eugene, OR - either Memorial Day or Emerald Cup Regatta (whichever gets the most interest)
Something in Northern CA late summer

This is a good news bad news post. The bad news is the Ultimate 20 was not able to fleet this year at the San Diego NOOD. The good news would be the Pacific Coast Championship trophy is looking for a regatta. What say you West coasters. What will be the best attended regatta this year?

I have sailed at Huntington and it is a great venue. It does look like the RYC regatta might be the best attended but I know nothing of the event. I feel the PCC's should have 10+ boats. If we can decide on a venue I hope more boats will commit. If I do not have a conflict I would consider goin to the Richmond Regatta in October.

I like the idea of early October on SF Bay at the RYC.   Lots of boats there already, central location, and good venue.
