2012 west coast calendar

just rescued #52 from the dead, thanks mike eisenberg for the find, was wondering what the regatta schedule for 2012 is? i also own a viper 640 so i'de like to balance out my schedule between the boats if posible. i posted pics on the facebook site if you really want to see what a 15 year neglected u20 looked like. the boat will be kept in so. cal.
our viper schedule is:
feb. midwinters in long beach
march  sd noods
june lbrw and cal rw
july the class wants to do whidby island but that's too far so u20 in huntington
sept. labor day at alamitos bay yc and isaf cornado yc
nov. turkey day abyc
and a few phrf races in between.

Glenn,
  Congrats on the new to you boat! I was speaking to a Viper owner at the Mallory Cup and he was remarking how dry the boat is compared to the Viper. Hope you enjoy it.

  We are looking to do the SD NOODs again this year since it is one of my favorite places to sail. Other than that I think we are looking at Huntington for the PCCs. Should have the best turnout for the year. I don't think many from the west coast will go to the NA's in Pensacola, FL but I hope they do. Should be a great venue.

 we don't plan on being competitive at first as we'll be using the original (1996) sails that came with the boat. they still look ok except for the spinnaker (sun rotted with cat piss smell)as the boat was only used 6 times and then parked for 15 years. i sailed a few wed. nighters with mike eisenberg so we'll be sparring partners to get me up to speed.
 pensacola is a great place to sail, i have family back there. hopefully i'll have time and money to do it.

That is pretty cool.  Great job!  Have you done the "thru-bolting" on the keelbox yet?  That was the one major design issue in the original boat (yours was 21 before Madison).  Check from both the keel side and from the inside of the hull cavity space.  If there is no significant cracks or delamination, then you will want to follow the the "thru-bolting" process described on the U20 website.  Some people have used 3 sets of bolts- that is a little overkill in my opinion but at least one set behind the keel channels is needed.

 what is the purpose for the extra keel bolts? is it to stiffin the top of the keel well or to keep water from coming in by spreading the load on the keel plate? looking at the keel repair post on the website he has the g10 bolted on with some epoxy glue. are the bolts temporary til the bonding cures? also would it be posible to put in an access port on each side of the keel trunk for the fix?
 it also looks like the keel well has a flange that the keel trunk/coming sits on top for final bonding.

I have never thought about the access port.  I would be a little suspicous because I think that section serves some structural function and it is kind of narrow with a lot of angles.

The purpose is to keep the keel box from delaminating from the watertight compartment insert.

The bolts are permanent and work good.  The G10 in the diagram functions as a backing plate to dispurse the loads.

We are about to  have our winter meeting for the Colorado boats. Is there any interest in the SD NOODS this year? I think some boats will choose either SD or charlestown depending on interest.

As was shown last year, this event is worth doing only if the Colorado boats show up. I think there was some discussion between the organizer and Steve Bowman as to whether this should be a 2 or 3 day event.  What do you guys that are traveling 1000 miles want?  Make yourself heard.  I will do either a 2 or 3 day event as long as it is not March 16-18.  I have to work that weekend.  I read that they are finalizing the date for "the middle of March", so we will see.

Traveling that far I would like a 3 day event. However if it is just the Colorado boats, we don't need to drive a 1000 miles to race against each other. The southern CA boats will need to attend.

I just checked, and the regatta is March 16-18.  Bad for me.  If I have a low customer count for a race that weekend, I may be able to send an employee to service my customers, but I won't know that for a couple of months.  I'll try to get Steve Bowman to conduct a local poll to verify interest.  If he's too busy, I'll pitch in and try to get a local boat count.

Madison is trying to get the rest of her calendar figured out.  We know we are going to do High Sierra.  There has been talk of Whiskeytown (three boats said they will race if we can get two more for OD).  What about Seattle NOOD?  What about Konocti?  We would like to basically add one OD race in late spring/early summer and then in the fall (probably Great Pumpkin).

What other races are people interested in doing?
