Keel Crane
« on: December 07, 2013, 12:19:59 PM »
I'm interested in buying a U20, but have to sell my Rocket 22 first. The Rocket is a great boat, but the keel crane isn't the best setup and has been a bit of a negative in selling the boat.

From what I've seen in some distance pictures, the U20 crane looks much better. I have a local boat yard that can easily fabricate one, but I need some close up pictures if someone could help me out.

Thanks
Jerry

The Rocket keel weighs 780#.  The U20 Keel weighs 450#.  So at the very least, the purchase would have to change from 2:1 to 3 or 4:1.  I would also have someone like Jim Antrim spec out the size of the materials needed to support the weight.  I would gues that the crane itself is strong enough to support the weight, but the lift tube that supports the crane would need to be up-sized.  I have all of the fabricated U20 keel lift parts in stock and they are available for purchase from the U20 class dealer Don Corey.

Michael,

Thanks for your reply. I do understand the weight difference. The local boat yard I'm using does a lot of metal fabrication for offshore boats, so they are well equipped with materials. I originally gave them a picture of both a Melges 24 and J70 keel crane. What I liked about the U20 was that it appears to be a 2-piece unit which makes storage down below much easier then a traditional 1-piece unit. So, I'm trying to get some better pictures so I can the metal fabricator what I'm proposing.

Thanks
