Code O

Has anyone flown a code O on a U20.

If so are there any pictures?

How did it work, benefits, drawbacks, etc....

We all sail PHRF at some point and I am wondering what others have had success with?

I purchased a code 0 many years ago.  I do a lot more PHRF sailing than OD plus we do a lot of point to point racing in lieu of windward leeward courses.  I got very frustrated having the true wind on the beam and not being able the fly the chute either direction on the course.  The code 0 took care of that.  Sorry I don't have any pictures of this tiny flat high clew stick of dynamite.  The opportunities to use the sail effectively are few and far between but when you can fly it there is nothing on the race course that can beat it.  The J-80s see us put up a spinnaker (the code 0) and they follow suit with their chutes and end up having to bear away loosing ground to us until they realize we can actually sail 20 or 30 degrees higher than them.  In light air you can do some very close reaching with it.  Jay Glaser built it for me when he was still with Ullman.  To me for PHRF it's a must have.  We have won spinnaker overall the last 5 of 6 years in our 18 week Wednesday night series and the code 0 gets flown several races a year.

May I ask what is the rating hit for a code 0 in phrf ?

Is the handling of the sail very close to the regular sail ?

141? PHRF-LO has the U20 at 144...

Hi Andre,
We take no rating hit for the code 0 as it is much smaller than a class spinnaker.  Here on Lake Norman the U20 ODR is 150 and the PHRF is 144 which allows multiple spinnakers, oversized spinnakers and oversized headsails.  It's a bargain.

As for handling the code 0, you hoist and take down the same way you do the class sail.  The take down is a bit more difficult because the clew is so high making it difficult to gather the foot as efficiently.

Next time you're down this way you're welcome to try it out.

Don, just buy a Harken Dinghy furler and roll the code zero up each time. It is way easier and more efficient!

Also in my opinion you want the Code Zero to be smaller then you really think.

  If you furl it, do you just leave it up when going to weather?

No you would drop it. but it is easy, just start pulling the spin sheet, easy the tack line and halyard all at the same time and suck it back into cockpit. Never have to leave the normal crewing area.

Interesting! This came up when I was crewing on a Synergy 1000 big asym boat. They have a code 0 which was a life saver in the PAC Cup. Several of the guys have raced on the U20 so we talked about if the U20 would find the code zero idea workable in the SF BAY PHRF stuff.

I'll need to dig through my ancient spinnakers see if any are code zero worthy. Some of the first asyms for the U20 were more code zero shape than spinnaker shape :-) Don you remember those first kites we had? Talk about dinky with no shoulders ha ha!!
