U20 Regattas - Where, When & Who's Going! / 2025 North Americans Summary
« Last post by Steve Shaw on November 11, 2025, 03:26:38 PM »
The Ultimate 20 Class celebrated its 30th North American Championships November 7-9 in the fall settings of Lake Norman, NC.  Lake Norman Yacht Club has hosted the largest turnout in recent years with 25 boats registered this time and teams from California, Utah, South Carolina, Connecticut, Ohio and even Canada.  The aforementioned team from Canada happened to be led by 5 time winner of the event, Brad Boston.  His team of professional sailors including Curtis Florence and Zach Mason showed right off the bat that they would be contenders by weaving their way through a 40 degree shift in the first minute after the start in under 4 knots of wind to win race 1.  Delaying racing until the breeze filled in later in the day, two more races were held in 5-10 knots of breeze allowing the team of Jeff Linton, Tim Porter and Steve Shaw to win both races.  Unfortunately the forecast earlier in the week rang true for Saturday and no racing was attempted.  Instead of ushering people out of the picturesque setting at Lake Norman, Steve Shaw from Shapes of Speed moderated a briefing/seminar while going over photos of the day before on the big screen at the clubhouse.  The fleet was greeted Sunday morning with a forecast of 10-20 knots of wind and nearly 70 degree temperatures.  While it took a while to materialize, the competitors were able to sail 4 more races in chamber of commerce type conditions and in the end the team onboard #21 Mighty Mouse with Jeff Linton, Tim Porter and Steve Shaw won 3 more races thereby cementing the second consecutive title for the team and the fourth in a row for the duo of Tim Porter and Steve Shaw.

We had 3 U20s run four races this year in the spin class. Our 4th was the Commodore and he was on the committee boat. Great fall race and a good tune up for the North Americans.

The final races of the season were held at the Richmond Yacht Club.   The Totally Dinghy race was held on October 4 with six U20s participating.  Four races mark races were held.  Donna Womble on Team Peabody was first, followed by John Andrew on Cinderella Story 2nd and Mike Josselyn helming Uhoo! was third.

The Great Pumpkin Regatta was on October 25-26, the first stormy GP in memory with rain, cloudy skies, and strong winds.  It did not discourage the eight boats that sailed the mark races on Saturday.  After the morning rain cleared, the winds were generally less than 20 knots from the SW, but the flood tide flowing with the wind direction kept the waves down.  Three races were held.  John and Jennifer Andrew were first, followed by Michael Eisenberg on Toon Town at second, and Donna Womble was third.  Sunday was predicted to have rain all day and the winds peaking at 30 knots so most of the U20s stayed at the dock with only John Wolfe on Breakaway making the attempt to round the islands.  Sailing clockwise, Breakaway sailed around Alcatraz and then rounded Angel Island to come in 41st out of over 130 boats.

While one more race, the North Americans, is scheduled with two skippers eligible for the Season Championship.  Donna Womble holds a unbeatable lead and is the repeat winner of this years' Matt Boroughf Season Championship Trophy.   Congratulations to Donna and her team for a successful season of racing in the many venues against a very competitive U20 fleet.

Perusing the 2025 results on Montana Cup. Seems there was a U20 sportboat fleet.  Might want to join them in 2026.  Could put together at Triple Crown Rocky Mountain series of Montana Cup, Spud Cup and Dillon Open.  Thoughts?

U20 Boat Maintenance & Care / Re: Dropped off the trailer.....

Terrible CJ.  Sorry to hear this, I hope your boat has a speedy recovery.
I got the rig all the way down today with the help of BJ Jones, setting up a time to get it to the local fiberglass guru, and have another ride for Nationals. See you all there.
