Each year, various one design fleets in San Francisco Bay have a series to promote their class and the best sailors who consistently raced throughout the year.  The U20 owners in the Bay area have developed a series that will determine a Season Champion.   Details are provided below:

                                                               2015 Season Championship
Ultimate 20 San Francisco Bay Fleet

The Season Championship is to recognize those skippers, crew, and boats that consistently participate in races held on San Francisco Bay or other races recognized for promoting and supporting the Ultimate 20 class in the region.   The Season Championship will recognize those skippers who score the best in those groups of races listed below.

November   Season Winner Announced in Latitude 38

Rules:
1.   Only Ultimate 20’s can enter the U20 Season Championship.
2.   Participants should be current year U20 Class Members.
3.   All boats shall be equipped and raced in accordance with the current Class Rules.
4.   Skipper shall sail all races.   In distance races, Skippers may rotate with Crew.
5.   Season Championship determined by lowest points based on the Position Scored for each of the Events listed under the Season   Championship.   RYC Mid-Winter and HO Lind Series will be scored for each date.
6.   A Mid-Winters Champion will be determined by the finish within each of the following races held at the Richmond Yacht Club: January, February, and March Mid-winters and Big Daddy One Design Races.   Should there be a tie, the Mid-Winters Champion will be determined from the position in the Big Daddy One Design Race Series.
7.   A maximum of twelve events will be scored towards the Season Championship; with one throwout allowed.
8.   For Regattas or Series without a One Design Start, scoring will be based on relative positions compared to other U20’s participating in race.   At least 3 boats must be registered for the event in order for it to count towards the Season Championship.
9.   Substitute races may be used to replace a missed race(s) in the Season Championship list.   Up to four substitute races may be sailed and the position scored substituted for scores that were missed in Championship series as long as at least 3 U20s are in the substitute regatta.
10.   Any Skipper that wins the Pacific Coast Championship will have their total score reduced by 2 points at the end of the season.
11.   If there is a tie, the tie will be broken by the better scoring boat in the Great Pumpkin One Design Series assuming both boats have raced in that Series.   Otherwise, it will be the better scoring boat in the Big Daddy One Design Series assuming both boats have raced in that Series.

One correction to the Season Championship rules:

The December RYC Midwinters race will be counted towards the mid-winters championship.

Great weather and good sailing conditions for both days of the Big Daddy regatta at the Richmond Yacht Club.  Saturday one design races were held on flat water with a slight ebb current and winds between 5 and 10 knots.  The racing was close with one finish with three boats overlapped.   Out of town boats ruled with Chris Chambers of Black Sheep (traveling from Northern Idaho) winning with two bullets and one third, Bob Comstock of Ultimate Antics (traveling from Fresno) placing second, and Phil Kanegsburg (traveling from Reno/Lake Tahoe) placing third.   The U20 teams all got together for beers on the deck of the club overlooking San Francisco and then settled down to prime rib dinners and dance music in the evening.

The Sunday pursuit race was determined at the start.  If you didn't make it over at the handicapped time for U20s, the wind dropped and the flood current pushed you back for 45 minutes.   Those boats that did start on time, drifted towards the wind hole at Angel Island until the westerly filled in and took everyone on a windy and wet ride to Alcatraz that was rewarded with a fast reach to Angel Island and then filled the spinnakers towards the finish at the Richmond Yacht Club.  Local knowledge was rewarded as Mike Josselyn of Uhoo! finished first among the U20s, followed by Bob Comstock of Ultimate Antics, and John Wolfe of Breakaway.

With three race events left, including the Pacific Coast Championship, Dave Woodside of Ugain is leading the Season Championship series on San Francisco Bay.   After 9 race events (out of twelve scheduled), four skippers of the seven that started, remain in the Series.   One point separates Ugain from David Krause and crew on Salsa.  However, both Mike Josselyn at the helm of  Uhoo! and John Wolfe of Breakaway are still within striking distance.   The Season Champion will be determined after the Great Pumpkin regatta at RYC

It came down to the last race of the season at the Richmond Yacht Club's Great Pumpkin.   The season championship was on the line with Salsa having only a one point lead after 11 regattas.  If Uagain scored higher than Salsa, they would have won the series as the tie breaker was the GP.   With three races and 7 boats on the line, Salsa scored second and Uagain third.  So, the SF Bay fleet's Matt Boroughf Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to David Krausz, Craig Watson, and Liz Ellison.   Congratulations to Team Salsa.
