Rules Question: Velocitek Prostart legal for OD?
« on: April 09, 2012, 07:00:24 PM »
I just bought a couple ProStarts to replace my Sailcomp compasses. (http://www.velocitek.com/prostart/) They're pretty neat devices. It's a gps-based compass, knot meter, countdown time and a starting line function with a nice big display.

The starting line function let's you can mark the ends of the starting line and it tells you how far off the line you are using its internal GPS.

The relevent section of the class rules is:
  • GPS based devices may be used only to measure speed and indicate heading during One Design class racing. Fully functioning GPS based devices may be used for all other types of racing.
My interperation is the starting line function is illegal under rule 12 in section OD-V. So does this mean I can or can't use my Prostarts for either Charleston or NA's. Or can I use them and just not use the starting line function?

The starting line function is not legal as per class rules.  Only Speed and Heading!

This is something the Class may want to reconsider. The pros ( as a whole) can usually get a lot closer to the line due to experience and greater number of starts they would do during a season. Prostart actually is more help for weekend sailors who spend less time on race courses and in most cases, start at least one boat length back from starting line.

I always seem to be over once a regatta or as one of my favorite PRO's always asks me which race do you want to be over!

So can a multifunctional GPS legal if it is set to display only speed and course during racing. I use a Garmin 76..
