What electronics being used and liked?
« on: February 17, 2020, 11:03:16 PM »
What electronic gizmos are racers and non-racers using? I Velocitek ProStart allowed? Information overload? Speed puck looks simple. Any other options people like?

The prostart is legal now. I use on of those and a Prism compass so that I have actual compass not GPS heading.

We use an older Tactic for the compass and timer, with a speedmate (not a gps) for hullspeed.  Simple combo that has served us well.  A buddy got a new Vakaros that he is letting me borrow this summer for club races.  Hope it is not too much of a distraction with all that date - eyes out of the boat!

Interesting.  A non GPS speedometer.  That must be the secret!

Seriously, thoughts on this one?  It seems like having true speed for SOG may be helpful for some tactical situations.  Does your crew prefer it that way Chris or just what you have?

Thanks

I like the Waterspeed application on IOS in addition to my Apple Watch. GPS speed and heading as well as start timer etc. Maybe a cheap backup to try?

Well, The kids say we are back in the game so Semper Gumby (U20-35) is looking for a new E-compass and speedo. Tack-tic, Velocitek, rock-box seems to be off the market, anything new? is GPS class legal now?

I actually haven't used one with speed on the U20 for a few years.  For J24 Worlds we used the Vakaros and liked it when it worked.  It would shut off randomly.  Ended up needing to get a replacement.

I would very much consider the new ProStart.  It has a magnetic compass which is a big upgrade IMO.  The speed is fun to look at when you hit 12-15 knots but otherwise just a distraction.

We went with the Novasail 360. Has magnetic compass and speed, distanve to line, etc. Like it so far.

U20 Class Rules (2020) state "GPS based devices may be used only to measure speed and indicate heading, and marking (pinging)
the starting line during One Design class racing. Fully functioning GPS based devices may be used for all
other types of racing"

With boats now allowed to using pinging, what brand and model of electronics are you now using? Would you change if you could do it again? Where did you mount it?  Did you have to build a custom bracket? Any photos?

I purchased a Sailmon MAX.  I don't have photos but I will try and take some.  It seems to work great.  Pings the line, big compass numbers, does speed for when you want it.  One thing I really like about it is that it is completely sealed and rechargeable.  You put the device on this disc that charges it.

I did have to build a custom bracket but started with the Tac Tic bracket which made it easier.  I wasn't a fan of their mounting bracket.
